　　In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors(反映) the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love.

　　Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen. Identity(身份) and appearance(外表) mean very little in cyberspace. Rather, a person’s thoughts-or at least the thoughts they type-are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.

　　Usually, this“faceless”communication(交流) doesn’t create problems. Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this emphasis on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation(谈话).swhereselse can so many people come together to chat.

　　But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably.(痛苦地)

　　但是有些互联网络使用者想要的并不只是聊天的对象。他们在找寻认真的恋爱关系。(serious love relationships)网络空间是一个寻找爱情的好地方吗？那要看你问谁。(That answer depends on whom you ask)这类恋情有些真的成功，有些则悲惨地结束。(fail miserably)

　　今天，我们要讲的句型是depend on，意思是“取决于……，视……而定”。

　　比如，朋友们商量要去旅行，可是最近天气变化很大，启程的时间定不下来，最后只好说：

　　The time of departure depends on the weather.

　　出发时间视天气而定.。

　　再看一个例子：

　　Whether he will go depends on your decision.

　　他是否去那儿取决于你的决定。

　　Depend on the situation翻译过来就是“看情况”，但是在口语中，人们通常使用省略用法说It depends.有时，为了加强语气，还在中间加入all。比如，快要放假了，同事之间可能就会出现这样的对话：

　　Hi，Mike.Where will you go for a journey on National Day？

　　嗨，迈克。国庆节你打算去哪旅行？

　　It all depends.Anyway I'm not sure how many days off we'll have.

　　那要视情况而定。不管怎样我还不确定我们能放几天假呢。

　　此外，depend on还可以表达“依赖，依靠”的意思，比如：

　　You can’t depend on your parents forever.

　　你不能一辈子依靠父母。

　　Let’s count, ok?

　　这是一年级小朋友都能回答的问题，“让我们一起来数数吧！”

　　数数的时候，要一个挨一个，漏掉了，可不行。那么Count out“数出来”，就可以理解为“没有算进去”，比如：

　　Please count me out from tomorrow's basketball match.

　　明天的篮球比赛请不要把我算在内。

　　相反，Count in就是“把……也算上”，来看一个例子：

　　If you're going for a picnic this weekend, count me in.

　　如果这个周末你们去野餐,把我也算上。

　　Count作为及物动词，还可以表示“认为、看作”，比如：

　　You should count yourself fortunate inshavingsgood health.

　　你身体健康,这就算幸运了。

　　在本文中，count作为不及物动词，意思是“有意义，有重要价值”，比如：

　　In sport what really counts is not the winning but the playing.

　　就运动而言,重要的不是赢,而是参与。

　　因此，如果我们把这种价值放在某人身上，就表示我们“信任”他，“指望”他，所以下面这句话，就要这样理解：

　　You can count on him to help.

　　你可以指望他帮忙。
