Uruguayan international Dario Silva scored his fifth goal of the season on Sunday as Sevilla humbled Real Madrid 4-1, beating the Spanish powerhouse at home for the first time in 11 seasons. The defending champions conceded all four goals in the first half and cost them a chance to replace Deportivo de La Coruna at the top of the standings. Earlier, Valencia also failed to move into first place when it slumped at home against Racing de Santander 2-1. In another game, FC Barcelona defeated Real Betis 2-1 to move into fourth place. In other results, it was, Osasuna 1, Valladolid 1; Atletico de Madrid 1, Villarreal 0; Mallorca 4, Murcia 1; and Albacete 0, Malaga 1. Deportivo leads with 25 points, while Valencia stays second with 23, with a superior goal difference to Real. Barcelona has 19, ahead of Atletico de Madrid on goal difference, while Osasuna is sixth with 18 and Santander is next with 17. In the first half, Sevilla devastated Madrid's under-strength defense, which lacked injured Roberto Carlos and suspended Michel Salgado. The first goal came in unfortunate fashion as centerback Ruben Gonzalez's attempted headed clearance in the sixth minute struck his defensive partner Ivan Helguera on the back and rebounded into the goal. Sevilla doubled its lead two minutes later when Silva crowned a rapid move in which Spanish international Jose Antonio Reyes played a major role. Worse came for Real's star-studded team in the 15th minute when Brazilian right back Daniel Alves headed the third goal over advancing goalkeeper Iker Casillas after interchanging passes with striker Antonito Ramiro. Sevilla's fourth goal in the 38th minute came after Francisco Pavon was dispossessed by Reyes, leading to Javi Casquero rushing in and firing past Casillas. Real's improved after halftime as Ronaldo, the league's top scorer, reduced the deficit in the 55th minute with a low drive from the edge of the area. The goal was the Brazilian's ninth of the season. Sevilla weathered the storm and received a further boost when Madrid midfielder Jose Maria "Guti" Gutierrez was ejected in the 83rd minute. Sevilla also ended the match with 10 men when Silva was dismissed moments later for gesturing to the referee. Santander striker Rodolfo Bodipo netted twice to inflict Valencia's first home defeat this season. Bodipo pounced to open the scoring in the 23rd minute after Valencia's defender Carlos Marchena was too slow to control the ball. Valencia took just two minutes to draw level, courtesy of Spanish international Ruben Baraja's neat back-heeled shot from a free kick by midfielder Jorge Lopez. Coach Rafa Benitez brought on star Argentine Pablo Aimar at halftime, but four minutes later Valencia was caught out again when Bodipo struck again from a cross by Uruguayan forward Mario Regueiro after more slack defensive work. Santander's victory was only its fourth in 32 league visits to Valencia. Mexican international Rafael Marquez scored his first Spanish league goal, heading home in the 83rd minute, to earn Barcelona a 2-1 win over Betis. The Catalan side suffered an early blow when Brazilian forward Ronaldinho limped off with a thigh muscle injury in the 18th minute. He was replaced by Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert, who was cheered when he opened the scoring in the 43rd minute thanks to a blunder by Pedro Contreras. The Betis goalkeeper allowed Luis Garcia's cross to slip through his legs, gifting the Dutch striker with his first league goal of the season. |
