The last two Swedes, Fredrik Hakansson and Peter Karlsson, fell in the men's singles quarterfinals at the Swedish Open table tennis tournament in Malmo on Saturday. Facing Chuan Chih-Yuan of Chinese Taipei, Hakansson had few chances, losing 0-4 (7-11, 9-11,5-11, 10-12). Unlike Hakansson, Karlsson put pressure on young Chinese lefthander Chen Qi, stretching the match to seven sets before losing 3-4 (7-11, 12-10, 5-11, 7-11, 14-12, 11-5, 7-11). The results ensured three Swedes - Peter Karlsson, Jens Lundqvist and Hakansson, the last man in as the No 16 in the standings - made it to the Pro Tour Grand Finals in Guangzhou, China, in December. Chinese Qiu Yike, who needed a victory in the last eight to qualify for the Grand Finals, was not as lucky as Hakasson after he lost to compatriot Hao Shuai 3-4 (8-11, 17-15, 11-9, 9-11, 6-11,11-4, 7-11). In the semifinals, Chen will face Chuan and Wang Liqin, who overpowered teammate Liu Guozheng 4-0 (11-5, 11-9, 11-4, 11-7), plays Hao. In the women's singles, world champion Wang Nan lost to Song Ah Sim of Hong Kong, China, 3-4 (9-11, 8-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-6, 11-4, 7-11) in the quarterfinals. The victory gives Song a berth in the Grand Finals. |
