  Principal Watson is showing Ms. Sears, a parent, around an elementary school:

  S:Thank you very much for the tour. I’m more confident now about enrolling my daughter here.

  W:You’re more than welcome. We’re especially proud of our innovative5 canine6-assisted reading program here in the library.

  S:Oh my! Is this a library or a kennel?7 What’s with all the dogs?

  W:This is a pilot reading program. Twice a week handlers bring their dogs here so that students can read to them.

  S:Are the children able to stay focused or does it become a playtime?

  W:Our expectations are quite clear and the students have been happy to live up to them. It allows them an opportunity to read to a non-threatening partner.

  S:I see. Students can read with more confidence without the scrutiny8 of a teacher or parent. Has it been successful so far?

  W:Over the past year, we’ve had students progress up to four grade levels in their reading!

  S:Wow! That is a success. I know that I was always scared to death of reading in front of the class.

  W:Yes, the dogs have been a big hit, but...

  S:But what?

  W: But the children are always asking to take the dogs home!

  沃森校长正带领一位家长西尔斯太太在小学校园里参观:

  西尔斯:谢谢你带领我参观校园,现在我更放心让女儿注册来读书了。

  沃森:十分欢迎。我们图书馆创新采用的助读犬导读计划,尤其让我们引以为豪。

  西尔斯:喔!天哪!这是间图书馆还是狗舍?这些狗有什么用途?

  沃森:这是试验性的导读计划,每星期驯犬师会带他们的狗来两次,好让我们的学生对着它们朗读。

  西尔斯:学生真的能专心吗?还是只和狗玩玩而已?

  沃森:我们的目标很明确,而且学生的确能很快乐地达到预期目标,因为这让他们有机会读给不具威胁性的伙伴听。

  西尔斯:我懂了。没有师长父母的监督,学生可以更加自信地读书。到目前为止这项计划成功吗?

  沃森:去年我们就有学生在阅读方面进步4级!

  西尔斯:哇,这么成功!我以前最怕在全班同学面前朗读。

  沃森:是啊,这些狗可是一炮而红,但是……

  西尔斯:但是什么?

  沃森:但是孩子们总吵着要把助读犬带回家!
