Ireland's Padraig Harrington clinched a nail-biting one-shot victory at the Hong Kong Open with two birdies in the last two holes yesterday.

The world No 10 drew level with leader Hennie Otto of South Africa at the penultimate hole before snatching victory with a 20-foot putt at the last in the opening leg of the 2004 European Tour season.

"I got very aggressive at the 16th when I realized Otto was in front by one stroke. It was all or nothing at that stage," said Harrington, who finished with a four-under-par 66 and an 11-under-par total of 269.

Harrington became the first person to win successive opening events on the European Tour after winning the BMW Asian Open in Taiwan last year.

The Irishman began the day one shot behind leader Christopher Hanell of Sweden. Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland, Thomas Bjorn of Denmark, Chris Gane of England and last year's winner, Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden, were tied for third on 273.

China's Zhang Lianwei, in second place on the Asian PGA Toursgroupsof merit race, ended on 280 after shooting 69 yesterday, finishing 35th.

Zhang trails India's Arjun Atwal in Asia. The winner will be decided at this week's Volvo Masters Asia in Bangkok and will earn an automatic berth for next year's British Open.

In Melbourne, Australia, Robert Allenby sunk a three-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole yesterday to end a four-way playoff for the Australian Masters golf title.

Allenby, who has never lost a playoff in eight attempts, birdied the first extra hole along with Adam Scott after Craig Parry and Jarrod Moseley dropped out with pars of the all-Australian playoff.

The four golfers finished the regulation 72 holes tied at 11-under 277.

Scott shot a final-round 8-under 64 to make the playoff with overnight leader Allenby (71), Parry (67) and Moseley (69).At Poipu Beach, Hawaii, Jim Furyk carded a 4-under-par 68 to win the PGA Grand Slam by eight strokes over Mike Weir.

US Open champion Furyk pocketed US,000 of a US million purse on Saturday and snapped Tiger Woods' record string of five straight victories in the exclusive 36-hole event for the winners of this year's four majors.

Masters champion Weir, the first Canadian to win a major, closed with a 71 to earn US,000. PGA champion Shaun Micheel shot a 70 to end 10 shots back at 145 and collect US,000. British Open champion Ben Curtis was another shot behind after a final-round 73 and made US,000.
