Seven new suspected flu cases

China's Ministry of Agriculture confirmed a previously suspected outbreak of bird flu yesterday and announced new suspected cases had been found in seven parts of the country.

But the Ministry of Health denied British media reports that said humans had contracted the disease on China's mainland.

Agricultural officials in Beijing confirmed a suspected case of the virus in Chao'an County in south China's Guangdong Province.

The confirmation was based on tests from the National Bird Flu Reference Laboratory.

The Chao'an County government has slaughtered and immunized fowl to prevent the virus from spreading.

Officials in the county now claim the outbreak is under control.

Health officials said yesterday suspected cases of the disease have been reported in Lanzhou City and Jingyuan County in northwest China's Gansu Province, Fuyang and Jieshou cities in east China's Anhui Province, Pingjiang County in central China's Hunan Province, Xiangfan City in central China's Hubei Province and Xi'an City in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

Officials in Beijing said local governments reacted as soon as suspected cases were reported, slaughtering chickens and implementing compulsory quarantine measures.

Samples from birds in all seven areas have been sent to the National Bird Flu Reference Laboratory.

The Ministry of Agriculture has also sent special task forces to the areas to help locals cope with the situation and prevent an epidemic.

The latest information has also been reported to the World Health Organization, officials said.

Officials are also investigating the mysterious death of several black swans at a zoo in Shenzhen.

Before the latest outbreak, bird flu cases had been confirmed in Long'an County of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Wugang City of Hunan Province and Wuxue City of Hubei Province.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health denied a report in yesterday's edition of Britain's Times newspaper that said people had been infected with the virus on the mainland.

The spokesman called the report "groundless and irresponsible."

"There is no single person infected by the bird flu on the Chinese mainland so far," he said.

To date, the bird flu has been reported in nine Asian countries, but only spread to humans in Thailand and Vietnam, where it has killed 13 people.

China's Ministry of Agriculture is calling for chicken farmers across the country to clean up their farms, slaughterhouses and marketplaces in order to prevent the disease from spreading even further.

The ministry is demanding farmers to completely disinfect farms and their surroundings, separate fowl from livestock and vaccinate birds.

Farmers who run small-scale chicken farms must pay attention to hygiene, and vaccinate their fowls if necessary. They should also operate under the inspection of local animal quarantine administrations, and report to local authorities immediately in case of any outbreak of bird flu, the ministry said yesterday.
