Honduras, US secure semis spots

Bobby Convey hit two goals on passes from Landon Donovan on Thursday, driving the United States to a 2-0 victory over Canada and a trip to the semifinal round of regional Olympic qualifying.

Honduras earlier beat Panama 3-1 to join Mexico and Costa Rica in Tuesday's super-semifinal matches that will decide which two teams head for Athens.

The losses ended any possibility of a first Olympic soccer tournament for either Canada or Panama.

Canada repeatedly found holes in the US defense during the early going, while the US attack seemed uncoordinated.

But at 29 minutes, Bobby Convey took a pass from Landon Donovan, raced a few steps and fired an 18-meter shot that sliced to the right and past Canadian goalkeeper Andrew Olivieri.

Momentum seemed to shift, with the Canadians playing further back and the United States recovering its touch on passes.

Donovan and Convey again joined on a scoring charge at 70 minutes, Donovan from the right passing to Convey heading almost straight at the goal.

If it was a NAFTA sort of game - Canadians playing Americans in front of Mexicans - there was no question about which of the trio was most resented.

The crowd of about 1,500 at Tres de Marzo Stadium was vociferously anti-American, booing the US national anthem as well as the team.

Earlier in the evening, Emil Martinez scored twice to lead Honduras, the champion of the 2000 tournament.

Martinez blasted two goals past Panamanian keeper Jaime Penedo at 12 and 27 minutes - the second on a free kick from about 20 meters out.

Forward Jerry Palacios sealed the victory at 77 minutes on a pass from Wilson Palacios, who had drawn Penedo out to meet him.

Despite a friendly crowd at the stadium just outside Guadalajara, Panama played with less passion than it found in Tuesday's dramatic 4-3 loss to the United States.

It gnawed away at the Honduran defense but mounted only a few major threats. Panama's point came at 24 minutes when Honduran defender Victor Bernardez tried to clear a weak shot by Luis Henriquez and put it into his own goal instead.

The United States was missing Zak Whitbread, who suffered an injured quadriceps against Panama, while Canada was without Julian Deguzman, hurt in a 1-0 loss to Honduras.

Otherwise meaningless games late yesterday and today will determine the standings in the two groups and who plays whom on Tuesday in the under-23 tournament for the North and Central America and Caribbean region.

In Group B games on Wednesday, Mexico pounded a 10-man Jamaica 4-0, while Costa Rica also won 4-0 against Trinidad and Tobago, with two goals by Erick Scott.

A final game on February 12 will determine the formal tournament champion.
