Milan pays for Abbiati's error

Lazio ended a two-year unbeaten streak by AC Milan in the Italian Cup by stunning the defending champion 2-1 in their first-leg semifinal at San Siro Stadium on Thursday.

"Milan is a powerful team, with players of great class. They can fight back in the second leg," Lazio coach Roberto Mancini said. "However we will be starting with an edge and the advantage of goals scored away."

A blunder by AC Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, after 40 seconds, gifted Stefano Fiore's opening goal for Lazio.

Abbiati, substituting for Brazilian No. 1 'keeper Dida, tried to outdribble the Lazio midfielder on a back pass but did not control the ball properly and Fiore scored into the open net on a rebound.

Portuguese defender Fernando Couto made it 2-0 in the 36th, following a melee in the goalbox as Milan defenders claimed an offside position.

Striker Filippo Inzaghi, returning from a 46-day injury absence, netted the only goal for the home team in first-half injury time.

In the second half, both sides produced and wasted scoring chances, and the Roman team got away with a useful victory on the road ahead of next week's second-leg match at Stadio Olimpico.

AC Milan, the reigning European champion and the Serie A leader, had scored eight consecutive wins in league and Italian Cup matches this year, and was unbeaten in the Italian Cup since January 2002.

In Spain, Brazilian forward Savio Bortolini scored an injury-time equalizer to earn Zaragoza a 1-1 draw with second-division Alaves in a Copa del Rey first-leg semifinal.

The late goal gave Zaragoza, a five-time winner of the trophy, the advantage when the teams resume in next Thursday's return leg at the first-division team's La Romareda stadium.

Croatian striker Juricka Vucko opened the scoring for Alaves, which is seeking to reach the final for the first time in its 83-year history.

Vucko glanced his close-range header home in the 19th minute after Uruguayan forward Ivan Alonso had nodded on a cross from the right wing by midfielder Edu Alonso.

Alaves, which has already eliminated three topflight teams this season - Real Sociedad, Valladolid and Celta de Vigo - appeared to be heading for another win to continue its biggest success since 2000-2001. But, the ejection of Alaves midfielder Jesus Turiel in the 76th minute led to greater Zaragoza pressure, and goalkeeper Juan Pablo Colinas twice made good saves from Savio's shots.

The former Brazilian international converted his third chance in the 91st when he pounced on striker David Villa's low cross.
