Suspected bird flu cases were reported in four other regions, a senior official from the Ministry of Agriculture said yesterday. Jia youling, ministry spokesman, said the cases were recently detected in Jinnan District, Tianjin; Macheng, Hubei Province; Anning, Yunnan Province; and Huayin City, Shannxi Province. Also yesterday, a Health Ministry senior official said the adoption of strict protective measures has ensured the safety of those working in bird flu-affected areas in the nation. The chinese mainland has to date reported no human infections among those involved in the work to prevent the spread of bird flu, said Executive Vice-Minister Gao Qiang. The use of preventive clothes, masks, glasses and gloves has helped ensure no infections among medical and disease control staff, poultry slaughterers and disinfecting workers. China's railway authorities have put brakes on all animal-related transportation at six stations in bird-flu affected regions. The ministry said in an urgent notice yesterday that all railway sectors should stop transporting, transferring and receiving animals, animal products and poultry. At the ministry's newly established bird-flu prevention office, more than 10 employees are busy answering calls from national railway bureaus. The office must provide a daily bird flu report to keep the government up to date. The ministry has strengthened baggage checks on all passengers before they board trains. Passengers are forbidden from taking poultry onto trains. The office said immunization is compulsory at the 63 ministry-affiliated poultry farms and companies, covering 137,227 poultry and 12,195 animals. No bird-flu cases have been found in the railway system, said the office. Since the outbreak of bird flu in China, the railway sector has transported four trainloads of an experimental vaccine to contaminated areas. With increasing demand for the vaccine, the ministry is requiring national railway transport sectors to properly arrange trains and take measures to ensure sound transportation. The ministry of Agriculture issued an emergency notice yesterday requiring authorities to monitor the habits and habitats of migratory birds to prevent the disease from spreading. Wild birds have begun to return to Southeast Asia and southern China as the weather gets warmer, which significantly increases the risk of spreading avian influenza, according to the notice. A more thorough mechanism of monitoring and examination must be established and more detailed information about migratory birds, including breeds, habitats and habits, must be gathered. It asked medical staff to disinfect migratory bird habitats and collect and sanitize their excrement. Poultry raisers were reminded to segregate flocks from wild birds. Farmers have been told to vaccinate waterfowl and prevent them from going to water areas inhabited by migrant birds. Waterfowl such as ducks and geese should be separated from chickens, and birds must be kept far away from livestock, including pigs. |
