Amway Plans To Open 50 Outlets
http://www.sina.com.cn 2004/02/17 10:21  Shanghai Daily

Amway (China) Co Ltd said yesterday that it plans to open 50 retail outlets across China in 2004 as the Chinese government is expected to lift a 6-year-long ban on direct sales by the end of this year.

"We anticipate that China (authorities) would insist on maintaining highly visible retail stores when the new regulations are in place," Richard N. Holwill, vice president of public policy for Alticor Inc, the parent of Amway Corporation, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

"We are comfortable with the Chinese government's desire to provide customers with reasonable protection."

Amway, one of the world's largest direct sales companies, was dealt a serious blow in 1998 when the Chinese government banned all direct sales to crack down on rampant marketing fraud caused by flaws in the sales model and on the immaturity of China's retail market.

Amway's sales revenue declined sharply to 320 million yuan (US$38.66 million) that year from 1.5 billion yuan in 1997 before the ban.

Amway China generated sales of 10 billion yuan in 2003, with around two thirds coming from its 120 retail stores in 99 cities on the Chinese mainland and one third from local sales representatives.

Meanwhile Avon Products (China) Co Ltd, another major cosmetics direct-sales company, said that the lifting of the ban will not have a big impact on its existing retail outlets.
