Palestine 'Incapable' Of Peace

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon accused the Palestinian premier of heading a "government of murder and lies" that is incapable of negotiating a peace deal with Israel, according to an interview published yesterday.

The harsh criticism appeared to set the stage for Sharon to push forward with his plan to dismantle some settlements and impose a boundary on the Palestinians if the peace efforts eventually prove fruitless in the coming months.

Sharon's comments came in response to what he said was Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia's half-hearted condemnation of a suicide bombing of an Israeli bus on Sunday that killed eight passengers.

Qureia, also known as Abu Ala, had criticized the bombing, "especially its timing and place," saying it hurt efforts to persuade the world court at The Hague to rule against the separation barrier Israel is building in the West Bank.

Yesterday, soldiers fired tear gas and clashed with Palestinian protesters near two sections of the barrier under construction.

The Palestinians "expressed regret about the timing of the (bus) attack because it could hurt them at The Hague," Sharon was quoting as telling the Yediot Ahronot daily. "The government of Abu Ala is a government of murder and lies. With such a government it is impossible to reach any agreement."

In the Netherlands, Palestinians won more support yesterday in their world court battle against Israel's separation barrier, with Jordan voicing concern it could destabilize the kingdom.

Israel's prime minister called the hearings a "campaign of hypocrisy."

In the second day of hearings, the International Court of Justice heard presentations by Belize, Cuba and Indonesia - the world's largest Muslim country - which accused Israel of violating international law on occupations.

But attention was focused on Jordan, which unlike other countries supporting the Palestinians this week, views the barrier as a direct threat.

The kingdom fears the barrier will make life so hard for Palestinians that they will flee the West Bank into the neighboring kingdom, straining its resources and upsetting a delicate demographic balance.
