A popular Hong Kong television news anchorwoman is returning to the city after nearly two years of treatment in Beijing for injuries sustained in a train crash, her TV station said yesterday. Taiwanese native Liu Hai-juo, 36 - also known as Tanya Liu - was badly hurt in a May 2002 train crash in London, which killed seven passengers, including two of her friends. More than 70 people were hurt in the accident, which happened when an express train careered off the track and onto a platform north of London. Liu, who was in a coma for two months, will return to Hong Kong tomorrow following 21 months of treatment in the Chinese capital, said Annie Wan, a spokeswoman for Phoenix Satellite Television. After regaining consciousness in July 2002, Liu had begun walking with assistance and was able to speak articulately, one of her colleagues said in December that year. She was transferred to a Beijing hospital after the crash in Britain and treated by highly regarded brain specialist, Lin Fang. Wan declined to provide further details on Liu's current condition, or say whether she would return to work. (The Associated Press) |
