UK Dailies Hail Historic Victory

It's taken 36 years for England's cricketers to score a series victory in the West Indies.

When it came on Saturday, it even kicked the Grand National steeplechase and Manchester United's FA Cup semifinal victory over Arsenal off the back pages.

"History Men," headlined the Sunday Times. "Jubilant England shatter West Indies."

"Hat-trick hero," the Sunday Telegraph said in reference to England paceman Matthew Hoggard, who dismissed the West Indies middle order - Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ryan Hinds - with three balls in a row to set up the eight-wicket victory in Barbados. It was the 34th hat trick in test history.

"West Indies humbled in three days," the Telegraph said.

England bowled the West Indies out for 94 and raced to the victory target at the Kensington Oval, roared on by some 12,000 of England's noisy fans, known as the Barmy Army.

"I said we could win out here before we set out and that was always our goal," said England captain Michael Vaughan. "But to do it took a hell of a lot of work.

"I guess the difference between the sides was that we came through the tough periods better than they did.

"To see the response we have just received from the 12,000 Brits in the ground is just incredible," Vaughan said. "I don't think what we have achieved has really sunk in yet."

After the victories in Jamaica and Trinidad, it meant that Vaughan's team had an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the four-test series and Brian Lara's men will only be playing for pride when they meet again in Antigua on Saturday.

"We've done it at last," the tabloid Mail on Sunday headlined.

"At last, at long last, the wheel has turned," said Mail columnist Patrick Collins.

"To understand how long ago that happened," he said in reference to England's last Caribbean triumph in 1968, "we might reflect that Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister and Manchester City were on their way to the league title.

"We are not speaking of the recent past, more like the middle ages."
