Xia Jing faces a few years in jail after his curiosity got the better of him. The Yangpu District Prosecutors' Office ratified Xia's arrest yesterday for alleged car theft after he reportedly used his own key to open and start a blue Santana parked on the road. Prosecutors said Xia saw a Santana parked on Shuangyang Road in Yangpu District on March 26 while he was heading home after work. A former driver, Xia happened to have a key to the same type of the car in his pocket at that time. He wanted to see if the key could open the door, prosecutors alleged. It worked, and Xia drove it away, said prosecutors. Xia told prosecutors he wanted to drive the car for a while and leave it at the side of the road. But as he drove, he allegedly changed his mind and went to a car repair shop owned by his friend. He allegedly told his friend he bought the car for 6,400 (US$771) yuan and asked him to paint it red. His friend believed him and promised to finish painting it in three days. When the car owner found the car was missing, he called police. Xia was caught when he went to pick up the car. According to a car professional, starting a car with the wrong key is nearly impossible. Generally speaking, a key only works in one car, the professional said. |
