　　Top seed Rainer Schuettler maintained his perfect record against fellow German Tommy Haas to advance to the BMW Open quarterfinals in Munich yesterday.

　　Schuettler, runner-up at the Monte Carlo Masters last Sunday, won the second-round match 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 - his fourth victory in as many matches between the pair.

　　Wild card Haas, who missed the whole of last season with a shoulder injury, upset American Andy Roddick in the Houston final this month.

　　Haas double-faulted and netted a drop-shot attempt at 4-4 in the final set to put Schuettler ahead. Schuettler converted his first match point when Haas sent a forehand long.

　　"The longer it lasted, the better I played," said Schuettler.

　　Jiri Novak earlier lost in straight sets to fellow Czech and occasional doubles partner Radek Stepanek.

　　The unseeded Stepanek won 6-3, 7-5 and will next meet Peruvian baseliner Luis Horna, who advanced to the last eight by knocking out seventh-seeded American Taylor Dent.

　　Horna was leading 6-4, 3-1 when Dent withdrew because of injury, leaving only two seeded players in the last eight - Schuettler and No. 4 Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands.

　　In Barcelona, Spain, second seed Carlos Moya was sent packing by Gaston Gaudio of Argentina 4-6, 4-6 at the US$1.17 million Barcelona Open yesterday.

　　After a rain delay that lasted three hours, home favorite and defending champion Moya found the going tough against his 13th seeded opponent.

　　In Warsaw, Poland, top seed Amelie Mauresmo of France ousted Greek Emili Daniillidou 6-2, 7-6 to advance to the quarterfinals of the J&S Cup.

　　In other second round matches yesterday, there were victories for Russians Vera Zvonareva and Svetlana Kuznetsova as well as Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

　　Second seeded Venus Williams of the US reached the last eight on Wednesday, when she beat Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
