Elderly population grows rapidly

  Shanghai

The city announced yesterday that the number of local residents over the age of 60 jumped by 50,000 in 2003, indicating that Shanghai's population is aging at a faster speed than anticipated.

"The number exceeds our previous expectation of only 20,000 people," said Shen Zhenxin, vice-director of the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.

As of the end of last year, the number of local residents over the age of 60 topped 2.55 million, accounting for 18.98 percent of the city's registered population of 13.41 million. When migrant workers are included, the city is home to more than 20 million people.

There were 1.4 million people over the age of 70 living in the city at the end of 2003.

Local demographers expected an explosion in the city's elderly population between 2010 and 2020.

The number of local residents over the age of 60 will grow by at least 1.5 million over that decade, while the number aged 15 to 59 will fall by a similar amount, said Gui Shixun, vice-director of the Shanghai Research Center on Aging under the Civil Affairs Bureau.

"This means that fewer workers will be supporting more seniors in the future," he said.

The percentage of city residents who are over the age of 80 is also on the increase.

There were 380,000 people over 80 by the end of 2003, accounting for 2.8 percent of the city's registered population and 14.77 percent of those over 60.

In 2002, this age group accounted for only 14.14 percent of those over 60.

"With more people get old and the elderly become older, to provide pensions, ensure medical treatments and good care for them will be extremely challenging," Gui said.

He said more governmental funding is one way out, but people should also try to find ways to lead a healthier life.

"Becoming old healthily is an international trend. If seniors can be stronger and reduce the chance of getting sick, definitely they will spend less public resources and lighten the burden on their children," he said.
