A local printing and dyeing company yesterday agreed to pay 7,000 yuan (US$843) to a local family that complained about the noise and smell created by the firm following mediation at the Jinshan District People's Court. Li guohe, a family member, said in the lawsuit the company's workshop produced great noise and dust every day, which greatly affected the daily lives of the family. The family lives right behind the workshop. The family was demanding 40,000 yuan in compensation. The company built the workshop in 1996, Li told the court. "Our house and courtyard are covered with dust every day," Li said. "And the great noise brought mental harm to everyone in our family." What's more, the family also pointed out that the company built a sewage pit to the south of their house, which created a strong smell, especially in summer. "The smell is intolerable," Li said. The noise, dust and smell not only brought inconvenience to our daily lives but also caused headaches and insomnia among other problems, Li said. He showed the court a report from a local hospital that said he is suffering from a nervous breakdown. The family filed its first lawsuit against the company in March 2003, asking the company to stop polluting their living environment. The court then ordered the company to stop its pollution in 10 days. But the company didn't take any action after it received the verdict. It argued it didn't cause any pollution. "Considering that the company and the family are neighbors and it was impossible for either of them to move, we offered several rounds of mediation," Kong Lingjie, a court official, said yesterday.
