A retired professor and his wife filed a lawsuit against their daughter-in-law and granddaughter to divide his son's estate worth more than 1 million yuan (US$120,481). The Xuhui District People's Court heard the case yesterday. The plaintiff is asking to divide the assets according to the Law of Succession. The law stipulates that parents, spouse and children have equal rights to any inheritance. Bu San, an 87-year-old professor from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, said in his lawsuit that Yang Xiaoping, his son, died of lung cancer two years ago. Yang studied in Japan. He also owned companies in Japan and Shanghai, as well as two apartments. Zheng Wei, Bu's daughter-in-law, refused to release her late husband's net worth or allow his parents an inheritance. "My client doesn't attach much importance to money as his pension covers his living expenses," said Xu Xiaoqing, Bu's lawyer. "He was upset that Zheng didn't show any respect and wouldn't give them a penny." The lawyer discovered that Yang owned 10.44 million yen (US$96,048) worth of stock and two apartments in Changning District valued at more than 1 million yuan. Meanwhile, Zheng submitted a will, written by Yang, to the court yesterday for the first time. According to the will, Yang left his Gubei apartment and 30 million yen to his daughter and 50,000 yen to his wife. His parents were to receive 50,000 yuan. The plaintiff said he didn't know about the will and doubted its authenticity. "Even if the will is authentic, it indicated the accused didn't want to give the 50,000 yuan to the old couple," Bu's lawyer said. Zhang argued that she didn't find the will until seeing it packed in one of the bags left by her husband. The court didn't announce when the verdict would be announced.
