The ACLU made the accusation at the United Nations on Tuesday. The ACLU said that the United States government used race, religion and a person's home country as reasons to treat some people as suspects. The group's director Anthony Romero said hundreds of Muslims from Arab countries and Pakistan were arrested and held without criminal charges. The suspects were not permitted to speak with their families. Some were held for months. Many were forced to leave the United States. The ACLU said those held were denied their rights to equal treatment under the law.
