LONDON (Reuters) - The hunt began on Tuesday to find the maker of Britain's best fish and chips, the nation's favorite take-away meal, with more than 238 million meals sold every year in a country of nearly 60 million people. Customers now have two weeks to vote for their favorite "chippy" by filling out nomination forms in one of over 900 participating shops. The top ten will be decided in October, with the winner to be announced in January by the Sea Fish Industry Authority, the organizer of the competition. The dish has been around since the 19th century, but celebrity chef James Martin, who launched the competition, admits it is hard work to fry the perfect fish.
