Some Newspaper Quotes On Chinese And Asian Graduates

  The Straits Times

  November 29,2001

beijing-They come for job interviews dressed in trousers and casual shirts. Sometimes, they do not turn up at all. A few candidates even come accompanied by their mothers.?according to local media reports, these job-seekers are Chinese university graduates who impress employers with their academic qualifications but irk them with their lack of social skills and emotional intelligence.?while several companies contacted by The Straits Times yesterday confirmed the phenomenon, they felt that it was because Chinese graduates were just beginning to learn the rules of the free market.?home Singapore employers told The Straits Times that even Singaporean graduates appeared uncouth and bluelesst work, even though the Republic has had more time than China to bone up on global management skills, as multinational companies (MNC) first arrived in the 1970s.or China, the MNC phenomenon did not emerge until the late 1990s. So it was little wonder that there were still many kinks to iron out in terms of what was expected of professionals, employers noted.?

beijing-Chinese employers have complained that while local college graduates boast excellent academic achievements, many of them have a poor emotional quotient(EQ) and lack social skills. The complaints were reported by Hongkong抯 Apple Daily, which quoted several employers as saying that graduates were accompanied to job interviews by their mothers or friends, or were over-nervous.?however, there are also many tales of the lack of social grace in other Asian graduates, including Singaporeans. Many highly-educated Singaporeans eat loudly, with their mouths open, at business meals. Others are heard making loud sucking noises after a meal.?chinese employers complain that local graduates often do not bother to call if they decide not to attend a job interview. Employers have also been left stranded by new recruits, who fail to show up for work and do not notify the company of their decision not to take up employment. The same has been said of Singaporean graduates.
