Snoring can hamper a child's intelligence and growth, according to doctors. A 15-year-old Jiangsu Province boy was released by Shanghai Hushen Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital yesterday after surgeons cut off the swollen part of his adenoids. The surgery helped him to get rid of his 12-year history of snoring. It is expected to help him to regain normal development. The boy identified as Meng is shorter and slower in his reaction. He is only 1.2 meters tall, a height in line with a child aged eight or nine. The family took him to many hospitals which failed to detect the problem. The boy visited Shanghai Hushen two weeks ago and was told his snoring restricted his development. Doctors said Meng suffered from adenoidal hypertrophy, or enlarged adenoids. Adenoids are two infection-fighting organs at the back of the nose above the tonsils. Chronic infection or allergies of the upper respiratory tract can cause the ailment. When adenoids are enlarged, people have difficulty breathing through the nose. As a result, snoring can occur. "The significant respiratory obstruction results in the brain's lack of oxygen and less generation of growth hormones. So children grow slowly and have poor intelligence," said Dr Xie Zhaoyang, who led Meng's treatment. The boy's mother added: "My son became smarter and quicker in his reaction than before. We never expected that snoring was the cause for all these problems." Doctors said there are 2.5 million children in China suffering from enlarged adenoids.
