A court has sentenced five farmers to death for stealing crude oil from a pipeline that ran through their county. Twelve other farmers who helped steal the oil were given sentences ranging from 3 years to life in prison for the same charge. The farmers, from Puyang County in the central province of Henan, were caught drilling holes in the oil pipeline in late 2002 and early last year. The People's Intermediate Court in Jiaozuo, a city in Henan, found that the farmers stole 450 tons of crude oil worth 977,000 yuan (US$118,000). Suspending oil flow for repairs caused economic losses of 2.3 million yuan. Chinese quality Spot quality checks on a range of Chinese domestic consumer products in the second quarter of the year show that more than 20 percent failed to reach minimum quality standards. The checks, carried out by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, revealed that just 76.7 percent of the country's consumer goods were up to standards.
