After my adventures on Oahu, I head to another one of Hawaii’s six main islands. It’s only a 35-minute flight to the Big Island, also called Hawaii. The Hawaiian Islands were formed by volcanoes, so I travel to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see one for myself. Many park guests visit Kilauea Volcano, which began erupting in 1983. Twenty-one years later, lava still hasn’t stopped pouring4 out of Kilauea! The night of my visit, I see rivers of red-hot lava flowing into the sea. A red glow and loud hissing sounds fill the night air. Incredible! After a day of hiking on Mauna Loa, a snow-capped mountain, I fly over to the island of Lanai. A friendly shopkeeper suggests I explore Lanai’s Shipwreck Beach. Here, it’s quiet and peaceful, and I quickly forget about the outside world. Strong winds and currents make swimming at Shipwreck Beach dangerous, but the scenery is stunning. I spend a whole day beach-combing. I also take pictures of a ship from World War II that’s been stuck6 on an offshore coral reef for fifty years! |
