WHILE watching professional tennis you often hear commentators discuss how games like tennis are "in the head", meaning that your control of thoughts and emotions have very much to do with how well you play. Your game is either "on" or "off".

While many of us play tennis just for the fun of it, we also are challenged by the idea of how it might fit into a total health and wellness strategy. In fact, with a little effort, it is possible to see that playing tennis well might actually be a great way to stay in shape physically, and, to be a winner in the other, no less important, dimensions of life as well.

The physical part of tennis is challenging. It requires a firm and correct grip and proper arm, shoulder and trunk motion, all with the feet in the right place on the court at the right time. This means having forearm and upper arm muscles that are in good shape and shoulders that are strong and flexible.

The foundation, therefore, for good use of the racket is fantastic flexibility and really good muscle tone. This demands regular stretching before and after your gym workout and a regular toning exercise that emphasizes opposing muscle groups to keep them in balance.

"Tennis Elbow" is a common condition that occurs with many activities, including tennis. It is a form of tendenitis that involve inflammation and scarring of the tendon of the extensor group of muscles in the forearm as it attaches near the elbow. It is caused by repetitive excess force transmitted through the muscle to the tendon insertion, leading to microscopic tearing and scarring. It can be prevented, or cured as well, by regular stretching and re-building of the forearm muscles and proper use of ice.

Shoulder flexibility and strength makes for good transmission of force and the idea is to stretch very well all parts of the shoulder and to do a light toning programme using free weights or gym machines. This needs to be at least 3-4 times a week and should be progressive in intensity, but slowly.

Getting the feet in the right spot means running and co-ordination. This means being aerobically fit and having stamina.

The mental part is not easy requiring sufficient rest and relaxation and an attitude of will to win without a sense of frustration.

The bottom line for all this is balance. All well persons have balance in their lives. The connection between the body and mind demonstrate this well. Achieving balance and avoiding stress prevents injuries and leads to better and a more rewarding life. Your tennis game might improve as well.
