　　Greek Underdogs Win Euro 2004!

　　After winning the 2004 European tournament1 in July, the Greek football team returned home to fireworks, cheering crowds, and a parade. Having defeated Portugal 1-0 to win the championship, the players were lauded2 as “the 11 gods of modern Greece.” Their victory was particularly meaningful because Greece had never won a game at a major tournament before.

　　Greece’s triumph3 was one of the most surprising upsets in the history of football. Originally the dark horse of the tournament, the team owes much to their German coach, Otto Rehhagel. Under his leadership, they developed superb defense4 and learned to take advantage of their opponents? mistakes. The team’s grateful nation even offered Rehhagel Greek citizenship!

　　勇夺2004年欧洲杯足球锦标赛冠军金杯后，希腊国家足球队在烟火、群众的喝彩声与游行队伍的热烈欢迎中凯旋归国。希腊队在决赛中以一比零击败葡萄牙获得冠军，队员们因此获得“现代希腊十一天神”的美誉。这次胜利对希腊而言意义非凡，因为他们从来不曾在重大的锦标赛中获胜。

　　希腊的胜利被视为足球史上最大的冷门之一。希腊原本并不被看好，此次能够获胜要归功于德国教练奥图·雷哈格尔。在他的带领下，希腊队练就了超强的防守能力，并懂得抓住对手的失误给予致命一击。希腊政府为了表示对雷哈格尔的感谢，甚至授予他希腊公民的身份。

　　Mindulle Pounds Taiwan

　　Typhoon Mindulle, which struck Taiwan in early July, caused enormous damage and dozens of deaths. Around the island, roads and bridges were destroyed by flooding. And in Nantou and Taichung Counties, mudslides1 wiped out homes and crops. Those living in the mountainous regions of Taiwan were particularly hard hit.

　　The army assigned 14,000 soldiers to aid in relief efforts. These included transporting food, repairing bridges, and evacuating2 people stranded in the mountains. The Police Agency imposed3 a one-month ban4 on hiking in affected areas. Mindulle, however, didn’t delay the university entrance5 exams. But students who missed the test due to the storm were allowed to take make-up exams.

　　敏督利台风重创全台

　　敏督利台风七月上旬袭击台湾，造成严重灾情，并致数十人死亡。全台各地许多道路和桥梁遭洪水冲毁。泥石流摧毁了南投县和台中县的房舍及农作物，山区居民受创尤其严重。

　　军方派出一万四千名士兵协助救灾工作，包括运送粮食、修理桥梁，以及疏散受困山区民众。警政署发布了一项为期一个月的禁令，禁止民众进入受灾区域。然而大学入学考试并没有因敏督利台风而延期。对于受台风影响以致无法参加考试的学生则被准许参加补考。
