Many years ago, children who had good manners kept quiet if their parents were talking with other persons. Today, well-mannered children have more free-dom.

Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other place.

Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia. Some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp” after you finish eating. Burping will show that you like your food. In some countries, if you give a loud burp, you are told to say, “Excuse me, please.”

In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia, it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. People show their good manners by turning their back on others while they eat.

What are good manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you're polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you.

Suppose you visit a friend in Arabia. You should walk behind the tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked into them. The people will ask you to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.

In most languages, a greeting is usually followed by “small talk”. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English-speaking countries people often make small talk about the weather: “Nice day, isn't it?” “Terrible weather, isn't it?” But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something which both people have the same opinion about. The purpose of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion or politics so these are not suitable topics for small talk in English. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: “Great game, isn't it?” At bus stops, people may comment about the transport system: “The bus service is terrible, isn't it?”

Greetings and small talk are an important part of conversation in any language. The way people greet each other and the things they talk about, however, may be different from one language to another. This shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behavior of the people who speak it.

  6. Small talk _______ .

  A. is a kind of conversation with short words

  B. is a greeting when people meet each other

  C. is to let people disagree about something

  D. is something we talk about to start a conversation

  7. The favorite topic of small talk is about _______ .

  A. the weather B. politics C. games D. languages

  8. The passage suggests that when we learn a language _______

  A. we should learn about the transport system of the country

  B. we should only master the grammar and vocabulary

  C. we should know the culture about the country

  D. we should grasp the importance of the language

  9. When we say “Great game, isn't it?” we in fact _______ .

  A. ask a question

  B. have a conversation

  C. greet each other

  D. begin a small talk

  10. What we learn from the passage is that _______.

  A. different language has different grammar

  B. small talk is an important part in a language

  C. small talk depends on the purpose of the conversation

  D. in English-speaking countries we should talk about the weather

  同步验收题参考答案

  听力部分

  录音原文及参考答案:(划线部分为答案)

  I. 1. It is bad manners to talk with your mouth full.

  2. Don't you think Martin has been behaving very strangely recently?

  3. I am sorry to interrupt you but there's a phone call for you.

  4. Her first speech made a deep impression on the whole class.

  5. Although Laurie is dead, I can feel her spirit with me.

II. W: We've been having our meals at the hotel all the time. How about going out for dinner tonight?

  M: What a wonderful idea!

W: What kind of food would you like to eat, Chinese food or English food?

M: We are used to Chinese food, but as we are in England, we would like to have something English for dinner. What about you?

W: Please don't worry about me. OK, let's have English food for dinner. There is a very famous restaurant nearby which serves very good food. Is that all right with you?

  M: That's fine with me.

W: Today is Saturday. The restaurants are usually very crowded and always full in the evening. I'm going to reserve five seats right now and will be back in a few minutes.

M: It's very kind of you.

Key: 6. At the hotel. 7. English food. 8. Five. 9. England. 10. Yes, he does.

III. In Japan, some restaurants and private houses are equipped with low Japanese style tables and cushions on the floor, rather than with Western style chairs and tables.

It is not uncommon in people's homes and in certain restaurants to share several dishes of food at the table. In such a case, you are supposed to move some food from the shared plates onto your own plate by yourself, using the opposite end of your chopsticks or with special chopsticks that may be provided for that purpose. The proper usage of chopsticks is most important for Japanese table manners.

When drinking wines, it is a Japanese custom to serve one another, rather than pouring the wine into one's own glass. You are supposed to check your friends' cups from time to time, and serve them more before their cups get empty. Similarly, if someone wants to serve you more wine, you should quickly empty your glass and hold it towards that person.

It is considered bad manners to become clearly drunk in some formal restaurants, for example in the restaurants that serve Japanese haute cuisine.

Do not start drinking until everybody at the table is served and the glasses are raised for a toast.
