Peking Opera Art Festival comes
http://www.sina.com.cn 2004/12/17 11:04  上海英文星报

The fourth China Peking Opera Art Festival is under way, with a package of 54 performances featuring the leading artists in the field.

The festival lasts for a two-week period, from December 1 until December 15.

The new productions included in the festival vary greatly in subject and represent different styles.

The various performances are divided into two categories: those competing for the grand golden awards of the festival and those that are just for show.

Many critics believe that the following four original productions are the hottest candidates for the golden awards of the festival: the symphonic poem "Mei Lanfang" depicting the late master Mei; "The Disinterested Official Yu Chenglong" manifesting the rectitude of a real official of the Qing Dynasty; "Bashan Scholar", a production sent to the festival from Taiwan province, and; "Crazy Calligrapher Mi Fu from Xiangyang", focusing on the renowned ancient calligrapher.

Gong Xiaoxiong, a member of the festival's organizing committee said that one of the highlights of the festival will be the martial arts competition which will involve over 900 martial arts practitioners based in 16 Peking opera troupes from all over the country, including famous artists such as Zhang Youlin, Xi Zhonglu and Wang Lijun.

Zhang Zhe, deputy director-general of the Shanghai Municipal Culture, Radio, Film and TV Administration, pointed out that the festival coincides with the centennials of Peking opera masters Mei Lanfang and Zhou Xinfang, so the organizing committee has been careful to specially present three performances commemorating the two great artists.

The organizing committee also arranged for four Peking opera productions - "Shanshan de hongxing" (Shiny Red Star), "beidouxing" (Pole Star), "yuejia xiaojiang" (The young warriors from Yue Family) and "Xin nao longgong" (Fighting in the Dragon King's Palace, New Version) - especially for children.

As for the non-competitive performances, Gao Meifeng, a professional Peking Opera critic, believes that "Three-inch Lotus Feet" featuring the revival of stilt skills, which have been obscured by the passage of time, would enjoy particular box office success, due to its excellent crew and splendid scenes.

For a detailed schedule of the performances, please refer to the listing pages.
