Complaints over unpaid wages have hit home as well. Local outfit Shanghai International, which finished third in the just-concluded Chinese Super League, also owes wages to its players, some of whom made the issue public yesterday. "The club's management tried to talk with me about possible transfer but I told them I'll not leave until I get my salary," International's goalkeeper Jiang Jin told G-Sports Channel. Jiang, who played for China at the 2002 World Cup, was also joined by playmaker Qi Hong, who also claimed that he was owed back wages. Both the players however declined to reveal the exact figure of their outstanding dues. Neither would they say if the other players in the squad were also owed money. Jiang and Qi, both key players for the team, are said to be earning in the region of three million yuan (US$375,000) each annually. International's general manager refused to comment on the allegations. Both Jiang and Qi are on the transfers list at International, which has suffered since shipping giant COSCO pulled out as the main sponsor. Other International stars up for the sale include former national midfielder Shen Si and defender Wu Chengyin, whose contractual salaries are believed to be in the same range as Jiang and Qi. |
