Real sees the stars in Turin

Most of the usual names are into the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

  But not all.

First, there isn't a Spanish team in the final eight for the first time since 1993. Nine-time winner Real Madrid and 1992 champion FC Barcelona both were ousted from the round-of-16 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"I can't say if the result was fair," said Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, whose team was dumped on Wednesday by Juventus. "This is soccer."

Juventus eliminated Real 2-1 on aggregate after 30 minutes of extra time.

Two english teams made it - four-time winner Liverpool and Chelsea, which is looking for its first European title. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho won it last season with FC Porto. Two other big-name English teams are out - Arsenal and Manchester United.

Italy has at least two teams to cheer - six-time winner AC Milan and twice-champion Juventus. A third Italian team could advance, with two-time winner Inter Milan hosting Porto on Tuesday to complete the field. They drew 1-1 in the first leg.

The other qualifiers are four-time champion Bayern Munich, 1988 champion PSV Eindhoven, and three-time defending French league champion Lyon. Like Chelsea, Lyon has yet to win Europe's biggest club prize.

Bayern, Liverpool, PSV and Juventus qualified on Wednesday. Chelsea, AC Milan and Lyon advanced on Tuesday.

The draw for the quarterfinals and semifinals is on March 18. Any of the eight clubs can be drawn against each other.

The champions League quarterfinals are on April 5-6 and April 12-13. The semifinals are on April 26-27 and May 3-4, and the final is on May 25 in Istanbul, Turkey.

In bayern's 0-1 loss at Arsenal, French striker Thierry Henry's goal in the 66th minute gave the Gunners some hope. But Arsenal couldn't come up with the second goal against defense-minded Bayern.

The germans won 3-1 two weeks ago in the first leg, advancing 3-2 on aggregate.

"The difference between the two teams was very small, and I still feel in the first game we didn't do enough," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

Liverpool strolled into the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen with two goals from Luis Garcia and another from Milan Baros. Liverpool won by the same score two weeks ago at Anfield, advancing 6-2 on aggregate.

"I think we surprised people," Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard said. "I think people thought we were going to sit back here and defend and go for nil-nil."

"No one will underestimate Liverpool after a result like this," Reds manager Rafael Benitez said. "It's very important for the club, the manager, the fans and everybody to be in the Champions League at this stage."

Liverpool was beaten by Leverkusen when it reached the quarterfinals in 2002. This time, there was never any danger of the Reds going out, as they delivered two first-rate performances against the Germans.

Psv beat Monaco 2-0 on goals by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and DeMarcus Beasley. PSV won at home to advance 3-0.

"It could have been different. We had two good chances early on," Monaco coach Didier Deschamps said. "After they scored, it became complicated because they are solid."

Dutch international Van Bommel said PSV's victory was all the more impressive after the club sold three key players this season. "When you think we lost (Mateja) Kezman, (Arjen) Robben and (Dennis) Rommedahl, all to English clubs, we have done very well," said the midfielder.

Playing in Turin, Juventus led Real 1-0 on David Trezeguet's goal after 90 minutes, forcing 30 minutes of extra time. Real won the first leg 1-0.

Both teams were down to 10 men after 22 minutes of extra time when Ronaldo and Alessio Tacchinardi were sent off with red cards. Minutes later, Marcelo Zalayeta scored on a 20-meter half volley that skipped in to the right of diving Real keeper Iker Casillas.

Ronaldo whacked Tacchinardi with a retaliatory kick to the shins after the Juventus defender appeared to grab the Brazilian round the neck as he bore down on the Italian goal.

"It was a piece of stupidity on my part," Ronaldo admitted.

"I feel sorry for Real. I'm a Real fan," said Juventus coach Fabio Capello, who coached Real in the 1996-97 season.
