WHAT are the most objectionable behaviours in the eyes of Shanghainese? The answer: raising disturbing pets, disposing of garbage randomly and throwing articles from highrises, the Wenhui Daily reported. This survey and resulting "bad habit list" was conducted and compiled by the Luwan District government and Shanghai University. It is the third time the list has been released. Jaywalking and spitting, which were near the top of last year's list dropped in importance this year. More than 86 per cent of those surveyed said the counting-down reminder (which gives 15 seconds warning before the light changes) located at some intersections improves traffic flow and they suggested such equipment should be used in more places. About 70 per cent of respondents said they wait for the green light when crossing the street. More than 84 per cent said they hold onto trash until they find a garbage can where they can dispose of it. More than 34 per cent said they often see people standing in line as they await a bus or metro train. But when talking about their own behaviour, the answers were not so positive. About 63 per cent of residents said they are not willing to give their seat to others on public transportation. Most people pointed to the long distances to be travelled and crowded buses as the reasons for not relinquishing their seats. Some teenagers said giving seats to others wasn't beneficial to themselves.(Star News) |
