Tsunami sirens will be installed along part of New Zealand's coastline to give tens of thousands of people up to four hours' warning before dangerous waves strike, an emergency official said in Wellington yesterday. Ten warning devices will be set up at fire stations and in other high-population areas along North Island's eastern coast within the next year, local emergency manager Barry Low said. The plan, drawn up in the wake of the December 26 tsunami which killed tens of thousands of people along the Indian Ocean rim, will give the eastern region the nation's first coordinated warning system, he said.
