  It is not the first time for German tourist Hans to visit Hangzhou. During the Golden Week holiday, he was attracted by lively fresh water fish from the Qiantang River and the crispy rice when he entered the Qiantang Bay Fishing Village Restaurant located in Tianyuan Tower.

  Therefore he didn't order the traditional famed dishes like West Lake vinegar fish or prawns fried with Longjing tea, instead, he wished to try local dishes like fish-dumplings stewed with river fish, taros from Longyou County and the crispy rice.

  "Foreign tourists patronizing a hotel restaurant are more interested in our local food now. They no longer order only traditional Hangzhou food." commented Li Zejun, the assistant to the GM of Tianyuan Tower. At present, the hotel purchases fresh water fish directly from Qianjiang Quay to ensure that the restaurant is able to provide over 20 different dishes cooked in home style in Wenye, Xiaoshan District.

  Apart from river food, local cuisine from neighboring counties like Lin'an, Jinhua, Chun'an and Tonglu becomes quite popular among the tourists as well. For example the crispy rice wrap with dried tofu and preserved pickles is a hit among almost all tourist groups. While for German groups, it's not uncommon to see fish from Thousand Islands Lake on the set menu.

  In the past tourists visiting Hangzhou there used to be merely traditional Hangzhou cuisine. However in these days, quite a number of foreign tourists are interested in trying multiple cuisines especially. local fresh food. Mr. Chen Xiaodong from Zhejiang Construction Int'l Travel Agent remarked that scenic spots like Wuzhen and Hengdian are added in the East of China Tour and foreign tourists are getting used to local homemade food.

  In Zhijiang Resort hotel, many local citizens ordered bamboo shoots and helped themselves by peeling off the skins, which aroused interests of foreign tourists and they also wanted to try this special food.

  Mr. Cheng Xiang, F&B manager of Yellow Dragon Hotel , said some of natural products like vines of pumpkins and sugar potatoes are also very popular among outbound tourist groups.

  "For Japanese tourists, it is a must to have healthy dishes like stewed winter melon with ham, pumpkin vines, sliced tofu skin in chicken soup, etc. Traditional Hangzhou food like Beggar's chicken is only ordered very occasionally now." said Mr. Ling Jiongqiu, manager of Japan & Korea Department of Hangzhou Merchant Int'l Travel Agent.
