　　With the economy sinking into recession, the war in Iraq about to enter its sixth year, and lingering uncertainty in Hollywood following the writers strike, it's perhaps fitting that the films competing for the best documentary Oscar mirror the gloom.

Winners in all categories will be unveiled on February 24.

Chief among the filmmakers' concerns -- and apparently striking a chord with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences -- is the immediacy of certain issues facing the U.S. and the world, with all of the nominated films exploring topics that are both urgent and underreported.

　　While Fine battled malaria in Africa, Gibney traveled to Afghanistan alone with only an HD camera, and Ferguson funded his debut film out of his own pocket after countless friends told him that too many other people would be addressing the same subject.
