猛男型男人不再吃香

Traditionally, men with a very masculine appearance were considered the most attractive. These days, however, it seems that this is no longer true. A study at Durham University shows that macho-looking men--those with small eyes and large noses, for example--are thought to be less faithful, less affectionate and not such good parents, compared to men with more feminine looks.

  传统来讲,外表具有男子气概的男性被认为是最有魅力的。然而,如今情况似乎并非如此了。在杜伦大学进行的一项研究显示,外表阳刚的猛男们——例如那些长着小眼睛大鼻子的男人——和那些长相较为阴柔的男性相比,被认为不太忠诚,缺乏感情,而且也不能当好家长。

Around 400 women and men took part in the study. They were shown pairs of faces that were alike except for small details such as the thickness of the eyebrows. Seen as a potential partner or parent, the softer or kinder-looking face was much more popular. The results of the study indicate that in a modern society, factors in a man's appearance that show dominance and strength are not seen as positive.

  约有四百名男性和女性参与了这项研究。研究人员向他们展示了许多对相似的面孔,这些面孔只在某些细节上有所差别,例如眉毛的浓密度。这些面孔被从未来的伴侣或当一名父亲的角度来进行判断时,较为温和友善的面孔要受欢迎得多。研究结果表明,在现代社会中,那些展现男性支配地位和阳刚力量的外貌因素并不被看好。

Dr. George Fieldman, a lecturer in psychology at Buckingham Chilterns University College, offers an explanation. "In a modern society, physical strength is not a necessity, but potentially a threat," he told the BBC. "A woman may choose a more feminine partner because it may reduce the chance of violence towards her and any offspring they produce."

  白金汉郡奇尔特恩斯大学学院的心理学讲师乔治·菲尔斯德博士对此提出了一种解释。“在现代社会中,体能并不是必需的,它反而可能是一种潜在威胁,”他对英国广播公司的记者说。“一位女性可能会选择一个较为阴柔的伴侣,因为这样会减少她和他们的后代被施暴的可能性。”
