  China Pavilion

The national pavilion of the host country has always been a cynosure. It has been decided that the exhibitions here will be themed on “Chinese wisdom in urban development”. The uniqueness of Chinese urban development can be ultimately attributed to the profound Chinese culture. The values and methodology guiding such development and highlights in Chinese culture, and cities have been a vehicle for a full display of Chinese wisdom. The selection of the exhibition theme provides immensely rich materials for the theme development and, more importantly, reveals the inextricable link between Chinese culture and the trend of China’s development。

“Chinese wisdom in urban development” has been defined as “self-discipline”, “social commitment”, “inspiration from nature” and “harmony in diversity”。

“Self-discipline” and “social commitment” are taken from the Chinese classic, Book of Changes. As requirements on people’s conduct, they summarize the understanding of the relationship between the national spirit and the national destiny in Chinese culture. Moreover, they are a pithy description of the essence of Chinese urban culture and the spirit of Chinese urban inhabitants。

“Inspiration from nature” is taken from Tao Te Ching (Lao Zi): “The ways of humans are conditioned by those of earth. The ways of earth by those of heaven. The ways of heaven by those of Tao, and the ways of Tao by nature。” “Harmony in diversity” is taken from a phrase in The Analects (of Confucius): “The gentleman aims at harmony, and not at uniformity. The mean man aims at uniformity, and not at harmony。” They show the dialectic view on personal relations and the relationship between human and nature in Chinese culture, and are directly reflected in the development of Chinese urban forms and the state of urban life。
