Each day I travel, I find people and things that are really inspiring. Last night, my friend David took me to the best recording studio in Manhattan. Platinum Sound Recording Studio on West 40th St. belongs to world famous hip hop musician Wyclef Jean. It has the most advanced state of the art technology. It is really amazing!

Wyclef,  have you heard of him? I f you have not, you should. His website is wyclef.com. Check him out. He did come to China once. And although I did not hear it, he was supposed to have worked with Jay Chou。

Wyclef was born in Haiti to a preacher. But his passion has always been music. He is an awesome musician. He is a singer and can play ALL different musical instruments。

While I was in the studio, I watched him work. He and his collaborators were in the middle of writing a piece of music.  What they were doing was putting the background music together. It was a very catchy piece, and for the following 45 minutes, Wyclef was to put additional sounds into the "bridge"。

I was truly amazed by the complexity of the control board.

Like a multi-talented genius, he added unique sounds to this music with 2 electric guitars, one acoustic guitar, one base guitar and he went to the piano, and added additional sounds and chords with piano music.  Finally, he did a little humming sound, which sounded like some amazing voice, fully utilizing the latest technology. The original piece was already really nice, but after 45 minutes, he made it sound totally amazing.  I have NEVER seen anything like it. I was a trained classical musician. I know how Beethoven would have 120 pieces of instruments played by 120 musicians. But here I was, seeing Wyclef playing ALL these instruments BY HIMSELF. So fascinating and I was totally inspired when I left。

It was 10:30PM when I left the studio, but according to them, it was just the beginning of their working "day".

In addition to being a genius of music, Wyclef is also a humanitarian. He just raised 5 million dollars for his very poor native land Haiti.  He of course is a huge celebrity in the country of his birth。

I watched a bit of his performance in the Montreux Jazz Festival last month. Quincy Jones introduced him before he performed.  (Oh, Quincy was heavily involved with the Montreux Jazz Festival which was founded more than 40 years ago in Switzerland) Quincy says that Wyclef did a 4-hour concert and he can outplay Prince and Michael Jackson!!!

What else was memorable about this evening? I met Wyclef's business partner Jerry. They grew up together in Haiti. Such a smart and simpatico man. Both of them adore music, and really has music in every cell of their bodies。

They sing, talk, move to music all day long and most likely dream it too at night. How lucky for Wyclef to have such a wonderful friend in his life!

Jerry is smart, and a very keen business person. Now, I heard that Wyclef himself is a very good businessman as well.  His big selling record with Lauren Hill of "Killing me Softly" sold 20 million copies worldwide。
