　　Henry Roth (Sandler) is a womanizing marine-life veterinarian who cares for animals in an aquatic amusement park in Hawaii. The film begins with a review of Henry's sexual conquests and scenes of him at work with his assistants Ula (Schneider) and Alexa (Strus)。

　　One morning, Henry meets Lucy Whitmore (Barrymore)， a local art teacher, in a café. They hit it off and agree to meet the next day, but when Henry returns, Lucy has no memory of him or their previous meeting. Pulling him aside to where Lucy cannot hear them, the café owner explains to Henry that, as a result of a car accident a year earlier, Lucy suffers from Goldfield Syndrome, a fictional form of anterograde amnesia in which each day's events disappear from her memory overnight.。。

　　Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) arrives at JFK International Airport, but finds that he is not allowed to enter the United States. While he was en route to the US, a revolution was started in his home nation of Krakozhia. Due to the civil war, the United States no longer recognizes Krakozhia as a sovereign

　　nation and denies Viktor's entrance to the US. Unable to leave the airport or return to Krakozhia, Viktor instead lives in the terminal, carrying his luggage and a mysterious Planters peanut can。

　　Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Head Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci)， who wants Navorski removed from the airport. Navorski collects money for food by retrieving vacant baggage trolleys for the 25 cent reward from the machine, until Dixon prevents this. He then befriends a catering car driver named Enrique (Diego Luna) who gives him food in exchange for information about a female Customs and Border Protection officer(Zoë Saldana)， who Enrique is infatuated with.。。

Amanda is an extreme workaholic. Iris Simpkins (Kate Winslet) is a society column editor for The Daily Telegraph in London。

　　Iris has been in love with Jasper Bloom (Rufus Sewell) for over three years, even though she broke up with him after he cheated on her with another girl in the office. At the office Christmas party, her boss announces the engagement of Jasper Bloom with the other girl, and Iris is deeply hurt. Meanwhile, Amanda discovers that her live-in boyfriend (Edward Burns) has cheated on her with his secretary. She decides she wants to get away for the holidays.。。

　　Shortly after the surrender of Japan, marking the end of World War II, United States Army Sgt. The war has left him with emotional scars, and he experiences flashbacks on a regular basis。

　　Paul's reunion with Betty is strained, especially after he discovers most of the letters he wrote her were set aside unopened. He is determined to make a go of the marriage however, and hopes to establish a new career for himself. Betty insists he continue to sell chocolates door-to-door, and he sets off to Sacramento. En route, he meets fellow bus passenger Victoria Aragon, a Stanford University graduate student whose Mexican-American family owns a vineyard in the Napa Valley.。。
