R.E.M. shocked the rock world by announcing a wholly unexpected breakup. “As lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band.We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

　　R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry. R.E.M. released its first single, "Radio Free Europe", in 1981 on the independent record label Hib-Tone. The single was followed by the Chronic Town EP in 1982. In 1983, the group released its critically acclaimed debut album. In1997, Bill Berry left the band, while Buck, Mills, and Stipe continued the group as a trio。
