Rio de Janeiro, the "Cidade Maravilhosa" (Marvelous City), is a city true to its nickname. Its famous landmarks and beaches draw a mass of tourists every year, but these must-sees can sometimes overshadow the rich essence of what makes it a unique destination. There is indeed much more than Christ the Redeemer (基督像), carnival and caipirinhas (当地特产鸡尾酒) in Rio.

* Modern architecture现代建筑
When it comes to architecture in Rio, people may associate it with favela shacks (贫民窟棚屋). Actually, Rio is home to a handful of first-class modern architecture, thanks to the legendary local architect Oscar Niemeyer (奥斯卡·尼迈耶). Every year, 90,000 spectators gather in front of his world-famous Sambadrome (桑巴大道) for the carnival parade (游行). Another building to see is the Contemporary Art Museum, which is just a ten-minute drive from Niterói (尼泰罗伊). The structure is well-noted for its futuristic design and wouldn't look out of place on the set of Star Trek (《星际迷航》).

* Street art spotting街头艺术
Street art was made legal in Rio in 2014 when the city's public spaces were officially opened to both local residents and professional street artists. Drawings on stairways and tall buildings have made the streets in Rio one of the world's most active urban art galleries. At the corner of Rua do Lavradio (拉夫拉迪乌街) stands an extraordinary piece: a gigantic painting of a woman wounded by a heart- tipped arrow. It was created by artist Pamela Castro, who prefers to highlight social issues in her art.

* Samba's (桑巴舞) birthplace 桑巴舞诞生地
Just beyond the city center's shiny office blocks hides historic neighborhood Pedra do Sal. This is the birthplace of samba and one of the most important cultural sites in Brazil's history. On Monday and Friday nights, hundreds of locals with a passion for Brazil's best-known genre of music gather where it began. Band members traditionally sit around a table as they play to the dancing crowd. You'd better arrive early to find a good place for the best panorama (全景) of the show.
