Finland, it seems, is living in the future, and the rest of the world can only sit back and marvel.

The sauna-loving (喜欢蒸桑拿浴的) population of this frozen Scandinavian (斯堪的纳维亚半岛的) country is once again breaking new ground, thanks to the forward-thinking planners of a small town just west of Helsinki (赫尔辛基) named “Lohja.” The town is in the process of approving plans for construction of a new business and commercial district but was having a hard time inventing interesting road names. Finally, the city came up with a couple of names with a more modern flavor: “Meme* Street” and “Emoji Street.”
在赫尔辛基的一个西部小镇罗荷亚中，有着一群具有前瞻思维的规划者们，正因为他们，这群地处斯堪的纳维亚半岛喜欢蒸桑拿浴的人们又一次有了新的突破。这个小镇正在审批建造一条新的商业街，但是却不知要给这条商业街起什么有趣的名字。最终，这个城市提出了两个具有现代气息的名字：Meme街和Emoji街。
Architect and planner Juha Anttila says the town planning committee wants to bring street names up-to-date so that future generations can get a sense of 21st-century life. “We have almost run out of plant, tree and bird names in our area. We wanted something that speaks to modern times,” he adds.

If locals don’t object to the proposal, it will be approved in the new year. So far, it seems most people welcome the idea, including one person who says “it would be great to live on Emoji Street,” and another who describes Lohja as a town “straight from the future.” There are also alternative suggestions, including “LOL Street” and “Vlogger Road.”

This isn’t the first time that Finnish officials had made use of the popularity of smartphone culture. In 2015, the Finnish Foreign Ministry created a set of national emojis, two of which will soon be included in all devices. Naturally, the emojis are two Finns in a sauna.
