You have heard the expression "horse sense". As you may imagine, It came from the time when the majority of people traveled in vehicles drawn by horses. A horse does have a lot: of common sense, and there are many true stories about horses having saved their drivers from danger of death.

Today for the most part, people travel by train, ship, airplane, and car ,but very little by the Use of horses. Modem vehicles are propelled by engines, and an engine does not have any sense. In case of danger, many horses could be depended on to help. Not so with the engine; the driver must do all the things.

In recent years, the speed of travel has increased greatly. With the increased speed comes greatly increased danger. The driver of a powerful engine needs to be careful. A moment of being careless may cost a life. In order to drive today, a person must be able to see clearly, and he must learn and follow carefully the rules for safety on the road. While the threat of a reappearance of SARS is still there, it is reassuring to learn about the latest developments in vaccine[疫苗]research.

Morn than 1.400 vaccine shots for SARS have been produced in China, and an application for clinical tests has been referred to the State Food and Drug Administration[SFDA], according to a Xinhua report on Sunday.

"If everything goes smoothly conducting of clinical experiments will be agreed before the end of December," Said Yin Hongzhang, head of the Biological Product Section of the SFDA.

So far China is far ahead of other countries in the search for a SARS vaccine, claimed Yin. At that time, volunteers will be sought in Beijing and Guangzhou to take part in experiments using the new vaccine. However, while cheering for the research breakthrough, voices of reason should also be heard.

What medical workers should always maintain is a cool head and careful attitude, which all essential in any scientific research. This is especially true when conducting experiments on human beings, because they are directly concerned with the volunteers' health and even their lives, and also because knowledge of the deadly virus is still too limited.

Media reports indicate that members of the public are reacting actively to the news of selecting volunteers and are expressing their readiness. Their courage is well worth our admiration. The trust they are placing in these medical researchers is the biggest support of their work.

he researchers have no other choice but to be highly cautious in the expected experiments. The safety of volunteers should always be the first consideration. Scientists from different countries have been put in a race in uncovering the mystery surrounding the virus. But to play a leading role should by no means be the ultimate pursuit[最终目标]of the scientific workers. It is people's safety and health that remain the biggest concerns.

While there are still so many mysteries to be solved, it is too early to celebrate.[China Daily, November 25]

Health and climate scientists have mapped how climate change affects different parts of the world in different ways. The scientists point to evidence that changes in the past thirty years may already be affecting human health. Temperature changes may also influence the spread of disease. For example, warmer weather speeds the growth of organisms that cause diseases like malaria and dengue fever.

The work by Scientists form the University of Wisconsin –Madison and the world Health Organization appeared in the journal Nature. Jonathan Patz, professor .of the Gaylord NelSon lnstitute, led the study. He notes that climate scientists linked global warming to the heat that killed thousands in Europe in August of 2003. He says poor countries are least responsible. for the warming yet are most at risk from the health effects of higher temperatures. He says areas at greatest risk include Southern and Eastern Africa and coastlines along the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Also. large cities experience what scientists call a "heat island" effect that can intensify conditions.

Professor Patz says average temperatures worldwide have increased about one-third of a degree Celsius in the last thirty years. But he tells us even that can make a difference with a disease like malaria. The report says average temperatures could increase by as much as six degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

Representatives from about two hundred nations have been meeting in Montreal, Canada to discuss climate change. The ten-day conference ends December ninth. It is the first such United Nations meeting since the Kyoto (京都) Protocol took effect earlier this year . The protocol seeks to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases released as pollution into the air.

Although they may not die from lack of love ,adults also need a great amount of affection (友情)and companionship . In the past , many people spent their entire lives in the communities in which they were born and raised .Many more people continued to live with their parents ,brothers and sisters after they were married and had children of their own . By remaining in familiar communities with relatives nearby, families had enough opportunities for friendly contact and for support in time of trouble.

Recent studies suggest that family arrangements in Western societies have not changed as much in the last few centuries as is generally believed .Yet most sociologists agree that in modern societies ,there are fewer opportunities for friendship and support from relatives outside the immediate family .Parents and children often live apart from other relatives ,and seldom visit them .Also ,the family moves when a parent accepts a job in another place or when it decides to live in a better neighborhood. Together , loneliness and mobility(迁移)force immediate family members to depend heavily on one another for affection and companionship.

Because the family is one of the few ongoing sources of affection and companionship in modern societies, a high percentage of people continue to marry ,even though it is possible for a single man and woman to live together without marrying. On the other hand, because affection and companionship have become so important, families are more likely to break up if the husband's or wife's emotional needs are not met within the family circle—even if all other family functions are being satisfactorily performed ,and in this sense ,affection and companionship have become the touchstone of the modern family.

72.It is generally believed that .

A.nowadays all people spend their lives in familiar communities

B.in the past a person could hardly get in touch with relatives

C.family arrangements has changed a great deal

D.Western societies have not changed much in the past few years

  73.Sociological studies show that .

A.the more the family moves ,the more support it gets from its distant relatives

B.parents and children live together to make up for the lack of relatives outside the family

C.family arrangements have changed and so there is little need for companion of relatives

D.family members are separated from each other because of lack of support from relatives

74.The word "touchstone" in the last paragraph may be replaced by .

  A.result B.trouble C.standard D.benefit

75.In the last paragraph ,the writer mainly wants to say .

A.affection and companionship can be gained from nowhere but the family

B.the best way to get affection and companionship is from the family

C.in modern societies a lot of families break up just for a lack of affection and companionship.

D.people get married for affection and companionship and break up the family for a lack of them.
