Hello everyone, welcome to the Tie International Education 2017 series exhibition- Beijing stop。 Now, let me introduce the gentleman sitting next to me- the director of fashion courses at the Beijing Academy of Creative Arts(BACA), Kevin。 Kevin, can you say hi to the audience。 My first question is, Kevin, can you introduce BACA please?

So BACA is the school based in Beijing, which prides itself to have international English British educational standards。 That we want to really educated the students that come to our school。 We see ourselves primary as the bridge between the Beijing educational background and the UK educational, specifically the university of the arts London, which is the Europe’s biggest university of art and design。

So, for the recruitment standard, can you say more details on this ?

So we have different entry levels, depending on the students’ age and students’ ability, aspiration and capacity。 Basically we can start at the A-level, which is basically the high school level。 We have started A-level course, which gives the students a very good foundation or a good base to be introduced as early as possible to the British educational system。 We also have a foundation, which is a level higher, to really help students to transition from high school in more generic discipline into the art and design world。 So a lot of applied, hands on, learning how to draw, learning how to record, learning how to bring up a creative concept。 And we also have a higher level for people already have a clear idea of what they want to do and where they want to go in London。 This is a level-4, which we called a higher national certificate, HNC。

So how many students are you looking for to recruit for each level of study?

One of the key aspects of our school is little bit a boutique education, and we want the students to be very well looked after。 There is a critical transition between Chinese educational background and British educational background, so they need a lot of attention。 Because of this, we try (tend) to have smaller class sizes。 And usually we are talking about ideally the ratio would be about four to six students per teacher。 We have a cohort classroom sized at: for the fashion for example, we are aiming about 50 students。 I believe about the same in art and design。 So (we are) quite a small and boutique school。

So in order to deliver its high standard art education, BACA tries to maintain a relatively low student to teacher ratio。 What is enrollment (admission) requirement, because we recruit relatively quite small amount of students。 Many students might not have the chance to get into BACA。

The first and must have is the English level, because all of our teaching is in English。 We basically require an English level of minimum 4.5 IELTS score。 Depending on the level as I said, the level which you will enter at, that can go up to 5.0。 It’s very important so that the student has the chance to really understand and to thrive。 So that’s the thing on English。 On the creative side, depending on which level they enter at, it goes from not even a portfolio。 It’s really about meeting the person, about talking with them, about understanding why they want to enter the art and design or fashion world。 Other level, they might need a portfolio。 We really need to see their creative intention。 Knowing where people will go in the UK, we also can spot, we can really screen the potential in the students we are looking for。

In China, the exam for art universities is different from other universities。 So for BACA, what is our timeline, in terms of students to apply for us。

The timeline usually starts (I have to say) relatively late, because of course there is tension with the Gaokao like you mentioned。 Usually the timeline we start having with the A-level because we have an A-level in our own school。 We actually have an internal。 That’s our prime, if you’d like, the first milestone with the A-level students potentially moving onto a foundation within BACA。 So these are the first people we will look at。 It goes all the way up to students might have a Gaokao or not, and very much close to the course start, which is usually in August, like a month before we start。 So it’s quite a long intake period, depending on which course and the success of the course。

What’s the most special about BACA courses。

I think because of the staff, all of the teaching staff has been trained in the UK and has taught in the UK。 (And we really have) What I think we’ve got a unique selling point- we’ve got really strong relationship with the UAL。 We have trust from the UAL, people, coordinator who do come to Beijing or to other parts of China, but mainly to Beijing for us to trust us that we will prepare the students in the right way and that the students will thrive once they do their undergraduate course in the UK。 That’s one of the real USP (unique selling point)。 I think the other point is that (we really) there are lots of schools out there that are (I’d like to call) a portfolio factory, which is all about what do you need to get to that school, you know Saint Martins or a famous school like Chelsea in arts。 And all they care about is basically fabricating of portfolio and saying “hey, look! This work is amazing!” Fair enough, to certain extant it does work。 But the problem is that once the person goes to the UK, they have big trouble because they haven’t been educated properly to stand on their own legs。 For us, it’s really about… It’s difficult。 Our passion is to really, truly educate the students, to really give them, empower them, and equip them with the right capability to go to the UK and to thrive there。

There are more and more students going oversea to study art。 In our present interview of the president of the Rome University of Fine Arts, he thinks Chinese students is not that creative。 So, from your experience, what is your impression?

That’s a really good question。 I think I wouldn’t really agree with that。 I think it’s about different systems。 Of course a teenage person has been brought up through the whole educational system in China is brought up in a different way。 So that’s the first issue。 What I have found here in my years in China is that actually they can be very creative, but it’s just about unlocking that creative potential。 For us, the Anglo-Saxon, the British educational standard towards creativity, which is quite well-known for, it’s really about not having the students thinking they know what they want but truly understanding what they are good at I mean what’s their potential。 This is one of the passions of doing this job, is that when you see a student that really thrives and blossoms and they really find their creative calling。 That then they become… It’s just, because if you choose to be into art or design or fashion, it has to be a passion, because it’s a very difficult career。 And those who really thrive in that, and those Chinese students who really click into this, it’s fantastic because they become very creative actually and surprisingly I think。

Well, you mentioned the Chinese students can be very creative。 So for those students who want to apply for BACA or UAL, what kind of advice are you going to give to them?

Well。 Ok, so the key point is don’t approach the challenge of entering the school as what does the school want me to do。 “Ah, I think that for this school they want to see this or they want to see that。” Because the result of this is that all the portfolios look the same。 So it’s not about the person thinking what the school wants。 So what we always look for is individual people that really have something special, that really…because what you talk about yourself, when you reflect upon yourself: where you come from, your background, your family history, your life path (even if it’s a quite young life still), that’s what we are looking for。 So the students have to be themselves basically, because each person is different。 And that’s what makes it special。 And we are looking for that。 And of course we are looking for passion。  I think one of the key aspects, I think what I have seen in maybe the Chinese educational system, people are told to learn how to do things, so learn how to draw well。 And the educational system in the UK is much more about exploring and finding your own ways。 And your own way will be unique。 That’s what makes it special。 That’s how you become a very high profile artist, because you have done something that no one else has done before。 That’s what we are looking for。 So they have to look inside themselves and say what makes me different and how can I represent this onto a portfolio。 And that’s the main point。

Ok, thank you Kevin for sharing all these important information with us。 As he mentioned in his talk, for Chinese students to apply for BACA, UAL or other art institutes, the most important thing is to be yourself and to demonstrate who you are in your own creative way。 Thank you for staying with us。
