I am delighted to be able to introduce myself as the new Director of Dulwich International High School Zhuhai, and to be able to formally say ‘welcome’.

The start of the academic year is always busy and filled with expectation about what the year will bring. For me it is filled with the hope and aspiration that your son or daughter will thrive whilst here at DHZH; they will be happy and fulfilled; that they will grow intellectually and emotionally as they learn new ideas and develop new skills. As a parent myself, I want the very best for my children and I carry this into my role as Director - I want the best for your child too.
新学年的开始总是忙碌的，但同时也充满了期待。 在我看来，您的孩子将在这个充满希望和憧憬的地方茁壮成长；他们在这里会感到幸福和满足;他们在这里学习新的知识和掌握新技能，在智力和情感方面获得提升。 作为父亲的我，希望孩子得到的是最好的；作为校长的我，也坚持把这份心意带到我的岗位上，希望把最好的给予我的学生。
I believe we can achieve the best for your child because of our belief that ‘students come first’. Our core values (which include ‘excellence’, ‘respect, ‘determination’, ‘fairness’, ‘service’, ‘leadership’, ‘friendship’, ‘community’ and ‘creativity’), plus our outstanding academic standards, offer students the opportunity to ‘be the best they can be’. This is what I tell my sons every day.

As an international school with an international outlook, we value open-minded questioning and independent thinking for our students, across all aspects of our British international curriculum. We value balance and the holistic development of children, ensuring them the opportunity to learn who they are, and importantly, who they might become.

Recent events – community

As I said, the start of the new academic year is always busy and filled with expectation. However, we could not have possibly imagined the impact that Typhoon Hato would have on the school and on our community. I understand that the past week has been difficult and disruptive for many. Families have been without power or water, and such a significant event will, by its very nature, change the way are able to function. Such an event can cause anxiety as people wonder how long it will take before things are ‘back to normal’. As you know, we were forced to close the school for 3 days (partly because of advice, and also because of health and safety concerns). There has been some loss of learning over this short time, and I understand that this may cause some concern. I want to reassure you that we are already addressing this, and putting plans into place so that students can ‘catch up’. They will not be disadvantaged by this event.

来自珠海德威高中What has struck me though, through this difficult time, is how people come together. Being new to China, I have been humbled by how community minded and organised groups of people have been in supporting the job of ‘clearing up’. Never was this more noticeable than at DHZH. On both Thursday and Friday last week staff, students, parents, and members of the community gave up their time to support the clear up job at school. I recall arriving in school on Thursday morning and seeing the results of the Typhoon. A few minutes later a Year 10 boy arrived and announced “I am here to help”. I was truly impressed. He was soon joined by a Year 13 boy and his mother (who worked tirelessly over both days). Others followed. By Friday more than 60 volunteers were clearing the debris from the back of the school with trollies and chainsaws. Members of the Friends of Dulwich group had rallied round and brought their influence to bear – how lucky we are to have such supportive parents.

I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to all those who were able to come to the school and support in this way. It was a real team effort.

Recognizing our students’ achievements

One of the privileges of being in education is that we can experience the joy of seeing young people succeed.

I was delighted to learn in June that a team of our students had successfully completed in the regional rounds of the World Scholars Cup, and were therefore eligible to attend the world finals to be held at Yale University in november. Many congratulations to Irene Yang, Freda Feng, Diana Sun, Jerry Pan, Harvey Ling, Shirley Luo, Stella Chen, Minnie Wang and Angela Chen on this wonderful achievement.

The beginning of term also brings with it the rewards of the previous year’s hard work. Our students are to be commended for some exceptional examination results.

Our iIGCSE were amongst the best ever, with A* / A results at 69%.

Maths and Physics figured strongly with A*/A - iIGCSE Mathematics 97.5% (72.8% A*), and A*/A - iIGCSE Physics 74%.. We had 8 students with 8 or more A*/ A grades. Special mention to the following students:

Our A Levels results were also exceptional, with A* /A results 62%, and A* / B results 86.4%%. Maths, Biology and Economics featured strongly with A*/A - 81% (Maths), 67% for Biology and 68% for Economics.

We continue to believe that part of our role is to provide opportunities for our students to be open-minded, questioning and independent thinkers so they can thrive at University. I am delighted that so many of our students have achieved their first choice placement - with 90% of our students having received offers from QS Top 100 universities ( and nearly 80% from Top 50 universities).

So, as we start the year ahead, can I again say ‘Welcome’ to Dulwich International High School Zhuhai, and ‘Thank you’ for all that you do in supporting us as we encourage your child to ‘be the best they can be’.
