　　考生在做翻译的时候，第一步要找到文章首句，了解文章大意后，基本上就不用再细读文章了，但是如果考题中出现代词指代时，我们就要进行第二步：回到文章考题上文去寻找具体指代内容的，联系了上文，才不至于将指代内容译错，或者不译致使译句不通顺。

　　下面我们根据历年真题分析不同指代的具体解题方法。

　　一、指代人物。

　　I shall define him as anindividual who has elected as his primary duty and pleasure in life theactivity of thinking in a Socratic way about moral problems. (2006年47题)

　　在这道题目中“him”在句中不明确具体指代的是谁。Him很明显指人，那么我们就可以寻找上文中指代人的名词。上文的一句话为“What isan intellectual?”很明显，“him”指代的就是“intellectual”，即“知识分子”。

　　所以指代人的代词的寻找方法就是，寻找上文表人物的名词。

　　二、指代物

　　To criticize it for suchfailure is roughly comparable to criticizing a thermometer for not measuringwind velocity。(1992年72题)

　　考察句子的前一句是“It does notmeasure character, social adjustment, physical endurance, manual skills, orartistic abilities. It is not supposed to -- it was not designed for suchpurposes。”但是我们发现这句话的主语也是指代词，出现这种情况时，我们要继续往前文找，于是找到“Anintelligence test is a rough measure of a child’s capacity for learning,particularly for learning the kinds of things required in school。”这句话。这句话的主语是“an intelligence test”，整句话都是对“intelligencetest”的描述。与后面的“It does not measure character, socialadjustment, physical endurance, manual skills, or artistic abilities. It is notsupposed to -- it was not designed for such purposes。”衔接起来，可以发现，这句中的“it”指代的是前文中的“an intelligence test”。而考察句子的it 与上文的it 指代的内容相同，所以也是“intelligence test。”

　　所以指代物的代词一般为上文中表示物的主语或是中心词。如果在考场上遇到像这个例子一样，考题的前一句也含有指代词，那么我们可以再向前查找一句，直到最终找到代词所指代的内容为止。

　　三、指代上文整句话内容

　　代词除了指代人或物之外，有时还有可能指代上文整句话的内容。

　　1991年74题“This will be particularly true sinceenergy pinch will make it difficult to continue agriculture in the high-energyAmerican fashion that makes it possible to combine few farmers with highyields。”这一句中的“this”的指代内容需要确定，因为如果不指代明确，译文将会为“这将尤为真实”，但是究竟是什么尤为真实，并不清楚。这时就需要我们去上文寻找this究竟指代的是什么内容，上文的句子是“By 2001, thepopulation of the United States will be at least two hundred fifty million andpossibly two hundred seventy million, and the nation will find it difficult toexpand food production to fill the additional mouths。”其主要内容是“到2001年美国人口将至少达到2亿5000万，也可能是2亿7000万。那时美国将很难扩大食品生产来满足人口增长的需要。”要做“…。尤为真实”的主语，一定不能是人或者是物，只有可能是一种情况，而“this”指代的就是上文粮食生产不能供给日益增长的人口这种情况。所以下文的“this”可以直接翻译成“这种情况”。

　　在遇到代词指代上文整句话时，我们可以翻译成“这种…”、“这一…”或者将上文的意思简单重复一遍即可。

　　综上所述，在翻译中如果遇到指代词的考察，首先我们要确定代词指代的是人、物、还是上文整句话，然后再据此寻找上文对应的人、物或是整句话的意思。
