　　Parker: Hey,

　　Carl: Really?Out on the platform?

　　Parker: Yeah.Well, I'll tell you what. This crate was out there. It was broken. Idon't know what's going on, but anyhow, someone's gonna be here forhim', so if you'll just hold him here.... You just hold him tillthey come.

　　Carl: No, Ican't. I can't do that, professor.

　　Parker: Well, hewas out there. No one's gonna leave this dog.

　　Carl: No, I knowthat. I know no one's gonna leave it. They'll be back for it. Soyou take him with you. And when anyone shows up I'll tell them that you havehim.

　　Parker:Someone's gonna be here. They're gonna come for him.

　　Carl: No, youdon't understand I'm gonna have to put this in here for like thewhole night if nobody comes. If they're not here... I'll lock himin here and he'll be safe for the night but all I can do is takehim to the pound inthe morning.

　　Parker: Goodthing it's Friday. We'll find out where you're headed and untilthen you can stay with me. All right. Sit right here. Sit righthere. Okay, yeah. Okay. Okay. Stay, stay. Chew on those, it's okay.Stay.

　　Wife: Hello,handsome.

　　Parker: Hi.

　　Wife: Hi. How'dit go?

　　Wife: No. Didn'tthink about you once. I have a little surprise.

　　理察·基尔饰演的大学教授帕克在小镇的车站上偶遇一只可怜的小秋田犬，它孤苦无依的身影惹起他的怜悯，多方寻找它的主人却无果，只能暂时寄养在家里，虽然妻子(琼·艾伦饰)极力反对，并想尽办法要把它送走，但看到丈夫和女儿对它无微不至照顾和由衷喜爱，终于决定让它成为家庭一员，因为知道这只小秋田犬来自日本，并且项圈上写着“八”，代表幸运，于是帕克为它取名“八公”。

　　八公陪着帕克全家一起成长，从小狗渐渐变成庞然大物。温文儒雅的帕克在自己的闲暇时间训练八公，甚至趴在地上自己用嘴示范捡球动作给八公看，但却无法教会八公捡球回来，后来帕克的朋友提示，日本犬不像美国犬，而且秋田犬这个犬种不会特意去讨好主人，Hachi和你要好是因为它和你之间有着感情上的牵绊，除非你和它之间有了什么转机，它才会去捡球。

　　八公每天准时陪伴帕克上班，傍晚五点准时出现在火车站门口迎接帕克下班，这可是他们的约会时光！在小镇车站的站长，卖热狗的小贩，附近商店的老板娘的眼中这都是已经习以为常的画面，周围的人都很喜欢Hachi，肉铺的老板娘会喂食给Hachi，并嘱咐它不要告诉自己的老公，而有趣的是他老公也会瞒着老婆偷偷给Hachi喂食，看到帕克从车站出来叫出那一声熟悉的“Hachi”，八公兴奋地扑上前去撒娇的样子，已经成了车站每天上演的画面。然而，有一天当帕克和往常一样去上班的时候，八公突然反常对着他叫，可能动物对未来有一定的预感，八公知道他的主人将会发生不测，所以尽量的拖延时间希望它的主人可以留下，以前从来不屑于玩捡球的八公一反常态的叼起了球。然而，帕克教授却没能理解那位日本朋友说过的，秋田犬如果捡球的话肯定是因为有特殊的原因，八公最终无力挽回一切，只能眼睁睁的看着主人离去……

　　就在那一天，帕克在大学演讲时突然倒下，他因心脏病突发而死亡，再也没有回到车站，后来，帕克的女儿带走了Hachi，希望Hachi能和她好好生活。然而，Hachi却一次次从家里逃出来，还去了原来的房子，可是那里已经有了新主人，之后，Hachi去了车站，一直守在那里等待着，无论严寒酷暑，每天傍晚五点，八公都来到火车站里等候、凝视……第二天、第三天……春夏秋冬，一直等到自己变老变弱，等了整整十年。十年时间里，八公依然风雨无改，周围的人都已熟知它，并亲切地和它打招呼。十年后，帕克的妻子回来了，遇到的Hachi，并知道它在这里默默守了十年，她坐到Hachi身边陪它一起等，这一幕使周围的人湿了眼眶。直到Hachi最后死去，它始终如一，它在死前看见了帕克从车站中走出，亲切地对它说：Hey！Hachi。一如十年前，Hachi满足地缓缓闭上了双眼。

　　《忠犬八公的故事》改编自1935年发生在日本的真实故事，1987年拍成日本电影，由仲代达矢主演，该片当年曾在日本引起轰动。2009年12月，该片的美国版本上映，由导演莱塞·霍尔斯道姆执导。电影的原型为1924年秋田犬八公被它的主人上野秀三郎带到东京。每天早上，八公都在家门口目送着上野秀三郎出门上班，然后傍晚时分便到附近的涩谷火车站迎接他下班回家。一天晚上，上野秀三郎并没有如常般回到家中，他在大学里突然中风，抢救无效死了，再也没有回到那个火车站，可是八公依然忠实地等着他。
