UNIVERSITY
1. You graduated from AAA University, a top university. Do you think that is an advantage for your job hunting? Yeah, actually some very top companies only choose some staff from top universities.
2. Some students from those middle level universities also gave their applications to the top companies. Will their applications be accepted? Theyll accept their applications, but very few of them will enter the interview.
3. Do you think the working experience of the part-time job is very important? I think intern experience is important for every student not only for job-hunting, but also for his life. Someone who is a freshman of a consulting company told me that if you have a good intern or part-time experience in a consulting company, it would be very helpful for you to hunt for the job.
4. How about the campus activity? Also important. Because some interviewers will ask you something about your campus activities even about joining any union. If you have not any campus activities, they will think your life is boring
5. Did you take part in any activity? Yeah, I joined the mass organization. Not many students or my classmates would like to take part in these kinds of activities. But I learnt something from it. I got acquainted with some aggressive people through this activity.
6. Nowadays, many students want to get some certifications such as TOFEL, GRE, and高级口译. Do you think they are helpful? Compared with ability, which one is more important? First, the company will evaluate your application form including your resume. This is the first impression you give. They may think that you have a very good leverage and you did not waste your life through the college life. Actually they will think you are a quite hard working student. If you have a very rare or difficult certification, they may think you are bright enough for the job. So it may help you to pass the first round. But I dont think that the certifications can help you a lot, because many people have these certifications at the first round. If you want them to leave a deep impression on others, you can put your certifications in the resume. I thinkshavingsis rather better than not having. Some companies may attach importance to your writing test score and maybe they will take your resume as a reference to decide whether you can enter the second round. Maybe your resume is also helpful when they make the final decision.
7. Whats the percentage of your class to enter the big five? Not a lot. Only about 6 or 7 people. Most are in local banks.
INTERVIEWS
1. How many companies did you apply for?Standard Chartered, KPMG,高露洁and EY。I got my first offer.
2. How many offers did you receive? Two offers. One is Standard Chartered and the other is EY.
3.How did you make choice from your offers? And why you chose Standard Chartered? Since my major is international finance, I think bank is more suitable for me. And I dont like to stay up in the night without any rest and interrupt my personal life.
4. Did the KPMG accept you? No. I dont know why they didnt accept me. I think my performance was good except that my Mobil phone rang during the interview. I had it changedsintosvibrator, but the office was too quiet, so we could still hear it clearly. I know this ring interrupted the interview. I think the applicants must pay great attention to the business manners.
5. Why didnt you apply for some consulting company? I think I didnt apply for the consulting company was not because I m not aggressive but some other reasons. It is because that I dont like this kind of life in the consulting company. Im quite traditional and Im a girl. I think personality is very important for the career.
6. Do you think all the companies interview questions are the same or very different? Not very different, just about some general information. But I dont think they are the same, just a kind of your general information. They dont have to ask all your general information, maybe just a part of them.
7. What do you mean by the general information? Just something about your weakness, strength, social life, working experience, social activities, learning ability, and the things that you feel difficult or you wonder.
8. These questions are not as easy to be answered, as they seem to be. Could you give me some advice on answering these questions? You have to provide some examples. I think personality is very important. You dont have to say you like reading newspaper or surfing on the Internet. You need to talk about yourself and what you have really done.
9. Did you try the BCG or Mckinsey? Actually they refused me.
10. When you were refused what did you feel about it? I think I didnt have experience and I didnt prepare well for this kind of companies. My cover letter may not be so suitable for this kind of consulting companies.
11. Why didnt you modify the application? I didnt have enough time and I knew that if you want to enter this kind of consulting company, your cover letter should be very different. But it was too difficult to write such a different letter. And my final cover letter was not so different.
Interviews in EY
1. How many rounds? Three.
2. How about the written test? It was to write an essay. The topic was WTO, Chinese local company and the challenge. It took about 30 to 45 minutes.
3. How about the interview? It was the face-to-face interview taking about 30 minutes. On that day, I just didnt want to be late. I arrived at the company one hour earlier. I could only sit there and wait. Then I wentsintosthe room and the partner came. He said," I heard that you have waited for a very long time. Why?" Actually, I dont think arriving one hour earlier is suitable. I think 30 minutes is enough. Then I said," It is raining outside and Im afraid of the terrible traffic." Then he just read my resume and application form and said," Your resume and application form are very different from others. There are so many interesting things." I put a paper on the application form. I wrote why I apply for EY and why I should apply for EY. I also listed my strength, achievements, and social activities. He said," You listed the reasons for applying EY. Do you remember your reasons?" I said I did. Then he asked," Would you tell me?" So the applicants have better not forget what you have written or copy something from others. Then he said," Good memory." Later he asked me to make a comparison between the big five presentation. I said," I only applied for KPMG. I should be honest to say that KPMGs presentation is more charming. But from your presentation, I could see that your attitude is very serious. That is very different from KPMG. So I think I should apply for this kind of company. And to myself, I really prefer your working attitude. Because I think your work is serious."
4. What about the second interviewer then? He was also a partner and it took about 30minutes.
5. Had he read your record of your first interview? I think he had read it. He said," You are the sixth one I have interviewed today. So would you ask me some questions?" I asked," What kind of personality do you think is suitable for this industry?" Then he said," What do you think?"
7. Youve learnt the values of the company in their presentation. Did you say something about the values? I didnt say anything about their values. I think these kinds of values are just some kinds of words. I dont want to memorize them. I just said something I wanted to say, such as teamwork
8. I think if he asks me to ask questions, I will welcome it. What do you think about it? Yeah. I think so, too.
Interview in Standard Chartered
1. How many rounds? Seven rounds. Most rounds were on the Internet. Just applications on the Internet, including the written test.
2. But how can they know you were not cheating? First I sent my general application form to them. Then they gave me a password. I didnt remember every round clearly. I just remember the psychology test in English. Just answer the questions, 200 words for each answer. The last round is the mathematics.
3. Did they give you a new password before each new test? No, if you didnt pass the round, it would say sorry to you immediately. There were writing, psychology and mathematics tests.
4. After you passed the Internet test. What happened? Later, they invited me to attend the interview.
5. How many people have passed the Internet test? I dont know. Many people failed in the psychology test.
6.That is very difficult. What about the interview? They just asked some general questions. It was the last round. They also asked you some questions that mentioned in the Internet test to check your honesty.
7. What do you think about Standard Chattereds presentation? Too many people attended the presentation so that some people shared one chair.
RESUME&COVER LETTER
1. Do you have any skill to share with other people about how to write the resume and cover letter? I think it is really difficult, not only for me, but also for everyone. I think you dont have to write your cover letter very long. Just one page is enough. List what you have done in your college. I think to different companies, you should send different cover letters. Actually I dont think cover letter is important for big five. But some consulting companies, foreign banks and other top companies, which are very competitive, choose very few people to enter the interview, so the cover letter is very important for applying them.
2. Have you read any reference books to guide you to write? I have read some reference books just from Internet.
3. Do you think Internet is a very good tool for job hunting? I think the Internet is very useful to get some information.
4. Today many people found job opportunities on the Internet. How did you get the job information? I got it from school. I think thats enough. I have read some job-hunting information through the Internet, but I dont think they are suitable for me. They are more suitable for those people who have several years working experience. Because the requirements mentioned in these information are higher than those provided by our school.
5. Many people prepared different resumes for different companies. How many resumes did you prepared? Not many. Actually I dont think my resume was very suitable for the consulting company. I dont think Im aggressive enough for this kind of job, and Im not the top student in school.
SELF-EVALUATION
1. A lot of people are competing for the position in Standard Chartered, why do you think you could get this offer? Could you tell me your strength and your weakness? First is my performance in school. I have a very suitable GPA. If you want to enter the interview of some top companies, you have to have a suitable GPA. In Jiao Tong University, GPA 3.5 is very high. So if your GPA is about 3.0, you will have the opportunity to enter the interview, especially the big fives interview. Second is the language skill. Including your mother tongue and your second foreign language tool. You have to be fluent when you are using this tool.
2. Speaking, listening, writing and reading which one is important? All of them are important. Many top companies have the written test. For example, all big five, PWC, KPMG, etc. And reading comprehension is also a crucial factor.
3. What do you think is the biggest disadvantage for you when you do the job-hunting? The personality. When I gotsintosthe room and talked with the interviewer, I couldnt feel anything at all. I thought I was not the top student who is more competitive to hunt this job. Many top students were also hunting this job. I was a little bit nervous in my first interview. But after that, I was more relaxed in the most of the interviews.
4. What about your career future plan? Grow with the company and share the achivement.
5. Would you give some advice or suggestions for the freshman who wants to enter a top company? Prepare well when you are still in the universities. You should pay attention to your study performance. You have to take part in some activities even you dont like them. Prepare to be yourself and be confident. If you want to have the high position in the big company, the most important thing for you is your human nature. When you are interviewee, surely, you should pay attention to the interviewers eyes. Thats all.
