　　You're driving home from work. You're tired, and the thought of shopping for food and cooking dinner makes you even more tired. Suddenly you see a brightly lit sign: "Hamburgers! Fries! Shakes!" Your hands are holding the wheel. Which way are you going to turn?

　　If you turn toward the hamburgers, you'll find much of what you're looking for. You won't have to do any shopping, and you won't have to do any cooking. Not only that, but you won't have to clean up after you've eaten.

　　Of course, the fast food will be about three times as expensive as food you buy in a store and maybe half as nutritious as food you cook at home. That's because you've got to pay for someone else to buy the food and cook it, and for these unpleasant containers that save on cleanup. Fast food is also less nutritious because the meals are not as balanced as those you can prepare at home. Fat content and calories are high, and the meals don't have enough fresh fruit and vegetables. Fast-food restaurant owners, who always care about money, also may cut corners on quality of foods.

　　Worst of all, those hamburgers will be the same old hamburgers as you've had a million times before. With home cooking, you can eat anything you want, not just what you can find in fast-food restaurants.

　　The choice is yours, of course. However, if you want to be healthy, wealthy, and wise, try cooking at home.

　　There is a lake near a forest in Sweden. The water in the lake is very clear and everything is quiet and still. On the far side of the water is some farmland and further away, across the field, is an old church built on a hill. It is springtime and it has just stopped raining. The stream flowingsintosthe lake is full and there is some half-melted snow from last winter on the ground.

　　The reason the water is so clear, and everything is so quiet and still, is that most of the plants and animals live in and around the lake are dead. There are no birds because all the fish and insects, which the birds need for food, have disappeared. Many trees in the forest are losing their leaves and bark(树皮), and are sick and dying. Others were blown down by the high winds of last winter. A farmer is working in a field planting wheat, but unless he plants a stronger kind of seed this year, the crop will be between 25 to 40 percent lower than a few years ago. The stone of the old church tower is turning to powder and unless the tower is repaired soon, it will fall down.

　　All the death and destruction in this place is due to pollution: pollution from smoke coming out of the factory chimneys and fumes coming out of the exhausts(废气)of cars and trucks. And yet this silent lake is hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest factory and motorway.
