　　All of us have often seen cowboys on the screen. People who enjoy watching Westerns usually think they know exactly what cowboys in 19th century America were like. But the picture of a cowboy's life that is shown in films is actually far from the truth.

　　Cowboys in Westerns are always white, aren't they? But in actual fact, the 19th century cowboys were often black or brown (Mexican). There were even a few Indian cowboys, especially in Oklahoma. The cowboys that appear in films don t show at work with their cattle; they seem to spend their time quite differently. The Hollywood cowboy hero never stops chasing bandits (强盗) and rescuing pretty young ladies from dangerous situations; he is able to use his gun at fantastic speed, and keeps on fighting bravely to the end.

　　Real cowboys in those days had little time chasing bandits. They had to work hard; they usually worked 10-14 hours a day, summer and winter. The cattle had to be rounded up and then the cowboys drove them many long miles to the railway stations,swheresthey were taken by train to slaughter (屠宰) houses in Chicago and Kansas City. To get the cattle from Texas to the nearest railroad stations was the cowboys' most difficult job. It usually took two or three months, and during that time the cowboys always had to stay with the cattle; they swam across rivers with them and tried to round them up after stampedes (惊跑). Millions of animals were driven from Texas up to Kansas in this way.
