One’s teenage years can be demanding, competitive, and confusing. And when life gets hard, it is not unusual to experience feelings of sadness, helplessness, or even anger. Experiencing these emotions is a part of life, and perfectly normal.

It is not normal, however, when these feelings persist for weeks or months. In fact, this may be a sign of clinical depression. Millions of people“regardless of age, race, or religion”are affected physically and mentally by this illness.

Though the causes of depression are not known, some research indicates a strong genetic connection, since depression can run in families. However, bad experiences and low self-esteem can increase the chances of experiencing depression.

As with many illnesses, there are myths surrounding depression. One of these—that teenagers don’t suffer from real depression—needs dispelling. Climbing suicide rates among teens and young adults is a very real problem that demands more attention than it presently gets.

Out of the Dumps/
